Check your brake fluid level.

Brake fluid is the one fluid that you never top off for maintenance.

The brake reservoir cap has a sensor (a float) in it that is designed to trigger your brake light on your cluster when you have low fluid.
Obviously a leaking tube will cause a low fluid condition.
However if everything is working properly (no leaks) the brake light means your pads/shoes/rotors/drums have worn significantly.
The caliper pistons will be extended more than normal to reach the worn pads so more fluid will be stored in the caliper housing rather than in the reservoir.
When you replace the worn components, then it is time to add new fluid and perform a flush..
