Brake help
I did my drum brakes today, and for some reason the drums do not want to go on. Both sides were a pain, I managed to get the driver side on but it still sounds like it is dragging. The adjustment screw is maxed out and will not get any shorter. The passenger side drum will not even fit on. The drums are in good shape, I did not get them resurfaced but now I'm thinking I should just to see if that will fix the problem. I did notice there is like a little lip around the outer part of the drum where the pad does not touch, maybe this is what is keeping the drum from sliding on. By the way the old pads and the new pads are the same, and they even looked like they had the same amount of meet on them. Anyone ever had this problem ? If not what do you guys think it is ?

Not to be insulting, but are you sure you have the adjustment bolt "maxed out" in the right direction? That's something stupid I could see myself doing. Otherwise, check the adjustment at the brake lever and make sure it's not too tight. With the shoes adjusted all the way in there should be no problem getting the drum over the shoes even if the drum has a little lip. Maybe you could post a picture so we can see if it's all in there correctly.

Its maxed out the right way, the adjustment bolt is the smallest it can be right now. What do you mean about the adjustment at the brake lever ? Do you mean at the pedal, if so that is fine. It almost seems like the pistons should go in more but they don't, once the one side moves in the other side moves out. Also just to make sure the drum lined up with the studs, I turned it around and tried it. Well it went on ok but when it was on I spun it and it seemed to wobble a bit. This could of been because it was not on that good and tight or maybe it is a little out of round. I'm gonna try the other drum on there tomorrow, that still don't explain why the other one is so tight too. I'll get pics tomorrow.

No, I mean the e-brake lever. Sometimes the e-brake lever gets adjusted to compensate for the worn shoes, and when the shoes get replaced there is way too much tension in the e-brake cable.

Well, they sounds like they're working properly since that is the way they are supposed to move. Make sure you center the shoes before you try to get the drum back on.
I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. Maybe a drum resurfacing would help.

Figured it, brake pads were to fat. Sanded some of the brake pads down and getting the drums resurfaced, hopefully that will take care of it.

Re: Brake help (90blackcrx)
Quick little run down, turned out the pads were to thick. And the pad surface, meaning how much lining up and down was put on was actually a little bit to much. Well I sanded the pads down and got the brake drums resurfaced. After all that the passenger side drum went on but it was really tight. So I drove around like that and let the pads where them selfs down. Well I came back, jack the car up and the pads did wear themselves down but now I had to adjust the parking brake. Well since the passenger side pads were close to the drum then the driver side was, the parking brake proved to be a lot harder then expected. The driver side was good but the passenger side would not stick when the parking brake was applied. In order to make the passenger side drum stick with the parking brake on, we needed to adjust the brakes out more, and since they were almost touching the pad this was not easy. We had to keep adjusting the brakes on the passenger side, then testing the parking brake and then adjust the parking brake. It all turned out good though. Had to right all that quick so please excuse any mistakes.
