well a b18a1 is the easiest to get a hold of, it will do 12 w a turbo.
the b18b is the similar just about 3 years newer.
the b20 is a great vtec than turbo project. it will do 12s as well w/ turbo.
b18c1 or GSR motor will work great too.
wuts ur budget?

Just curious about this would it be better to go with a b series without vtec if your doing turbo or does it even matter just wondering?

well if ya wanna go cheap boost a b18b1, ive read around that their stock internals can hold up to 300 hp. i dont know about 1/4 mile times tho.

I think I've seen b18b1 hold up to 350 hp with turbo on stock internals. They key is in the tuning.

they said if only ur shooting for high 12's.. but if your shooting for below 12's like 11 or 10. its gonna damage the engine especially the block.. thats wat i think??

Good choice. Stick with the B18C.

go b18b1, best bang for ur buck IMO. You will still b able to put some serious numbers down on track and if u mess up ur engine there are dime a dozen of b18b1 and much cheaper than b18c1

It's sad this is the best post in the thread.

Get a plan together and be sure you know it and your budget before buying anything.

Cost only, the vtec motors flow better (head flow is key in any car).

1/4 times can be anything with any power. You can run real fast with low hp or slow with tons.

I don't think they've been pushing the ls motors that high, but if someone has I'd like to see it, that's quite impressive being the rods aren't the most robust.

Depends on build, how you use it, how often you use it. etc. Blocks last thing i'd worry about, first thing would be rods

This might not suit him.

While it's true, it's also not, sadly b's are just getting rarer as they've been phased out for 10 years now.

Ok so the OP has something more to think about,

you say you want 12s and no idea on budget. What do you want out of your 12s? Are you willing to run slicks? Will the car be road legal? Are 12s in the hands of anyone or 12s in a good driver? (will you be upset if your first trip is a 15 when you have a 12 in the car) How hard core will you be for 12s? Are you willing to build suspension for just launching? Run a massive gear etc?

Think about what you want out of the car outside of a 12 sec 1/4 and we'd be happy to help.

Education for stuff like this is free.

My advice, learn to drive attend HPDE's auto X etc.
Get a job.
Read here and other places.

Then worry about modifications.
