Aww gotta love the b16 with its turboless turbo lag. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

Well said. Perfectly describes b16
Not so bad once you get all the bolt-ons.

Jester88Si 07-02-2004 08:05 PM

yeah I noticed the torque curve is kinda flat which makes it more bareable.

hmm, what is your compression ratio and what kind of cams are you running???? seems like you have quite a few of mods. i think you can put down better # with some tuning.

Compression somewhere around 11.x-1. Running stock 1st gen b16a cams. Manual or auto I dont know. Currently I'm just working on passing smog at the ref so I need to keep everything legal. After I pass smog I'm planning on getting hondata, putting some nice cams in, and probably a new intakemanifold//tb. You gotta remember I'm using mostly stock first gen b16a stuff which isn't exactly known for power and this is just a baseline. No tuning involved. But what can you tune? I'm running a nice a/f and vtec seems to be in a good spot.

maybe, he means tune out that big dip from 4700-5500 rpms...

1st goal. Passing california smog. Then I can tune to my hearts desire.

Rollo Lawson 07-03-2004 07:48 AM

your cams are 5spd. the auto cams peak at 7K and drop mad fast. your numbers are o.k. i figure with some tuning and a few other parts you can make 170whp easy. my boy made 170whp & 117wtq with the head shaved .030, dc 4-1, intake, exhaust and Hondata tuning. stock im, t/b, cams, cams gears, and, he still had p/s and a/c.

How do you plan on passing Cali smog if you have a swap.. I had to pay 200 to get my car illegally smogged by a shop nearby. Cali smog laws must have been invented by Nazi's.

Smog no waaaay!!!
As far as i know cali won't ever approve a B16 swap, nothing matches the smog machines settings so it won't calibrate to pass. 2 cams, timing, the machine uses all that to make the results and it won't match atall, it'll be an immediate fail. You have to make friends in high places or register it in Nevada. =]

And i think one of the problems might be A/F mix, maybe you could use bigger injectors. I know my B16 bogs from my injection system.

Jonathan_ED3 07-03-2004 12:52 PM

Lots of people have passed with B series swaps in California! I read threads here all the time about it

To pass california smog with a b16a you have to have all usdm emmissions equipment from a 94-97del sol dohc vtec or else a 99-00si. Then you must go to a smog referee who will basically tell the gov't that your car is now a del sol or civic si and from now on your car will be tested as that. There are hundreds of posts about it on this forum. Also, what do you mean my A/F mix? The guy who was dynoing it said it looked good across the board. How can I tell if it's bogging from the injection system?

What kind of dyno was this on?

b16 swap will never pass CA smog? Have you people been under a rock? You can get it approved now and get a BAR sticker making it 100% legal.

hey great numbers, really impressive. when honda claims 160 to flywheel, i don't know why so many people complain about b16's, i think they are one the top 5 honda engines. good job, you probably around 180 at flywheel. if you need some b16 stuff, i got it.

Vtec actually needs to be bumped up to 56-5800~ rpms. You will have about 15~20 more useable horsepower in the 5-6000k range. That huge Dip in your graph is just your vtec turning on to early. I've tuned several B-series and bumping it up usually smooths it out just fine.
