Which asr subframe brace do I use for an ef
Hi, I noticed some people are using an asr rear subframe brace from a newer civic on the old ef's. Just using the two main holes. Can someone tell me which one it is?
Thanks

There is absolutely no function for this brace on an EF. It is used on other civics because they have rear sway bars that attach to their rear subframe. The EF sway bars attach to the frame rail and do not attach to the rear subframe. You would be better off with an ebay rear stabilizer bar.

The rear sway attaches to the rear frame rail in an EF. It does not attach to the rear subframe, so there is little need to reinforce this part.
Here is a pic of someone who attached a subframe reinforcement from another car. In this application, the part is purely for looks and serves no functional purpose.
Subframe reinforcements are needed only for cars that have strong rear sway bars that actually attach to the rear subframe and place stress on them. In those cars it is important to reinforce the subframe to prevent tearout. (For EFs it is a useless part.)

I could be mistaken, but I believe the bar from Progress connects to the rear subframe instead of the tow hook mounts.

Progress seems to have the worst design of all the rear sway bars for the EF. They use nutserts which break over time and so people just weld them to the subframe. Only problem is that the subframe was not designed to be stressed in this manner and the welds eventually fail. On top of having the worst design they are also the most expensive ($250)
If you are in the market for a rear sway bar many people are happy with the Suspension Techniques, Tanabe, and ASR Bars.
Here is a link to Progress website with a PDF of the installation manual.

Re: Which asr subframe brace do I use for an ef
ASR will be coming out with a kit for the ef this summer just be patient the kit will be similar to the current da kit
http://www.weaksauceparts.com/store/...9&cat=0&page=1
this is the conversation i had with ASR
NlCK BERMUDEZ (2:52:14 PM): is there any way to get a 24mm kit for the ef maybe using the 32mm hardware with a da 24MM BAR?
NlCK BERMUDEZ (2:53:15 PM): EF=88-91 HONDA CIVIC
ASRTECH (3:41:31 PM): Hello Nick, we will be working on an EF kit similar to the DA that we offer now.
ASRTECH (3:42:09 PM): it should be out early summer
NlCK BERMUDEZ (3:42:44 PM): thanks allot is there going to be a waiting list
ASRTECH (3:43:18 PM): no there wont be any waiting list there should we will make plenty of them for every dealer
NlCK BERMUDEZ (3:45:50 PM): thanks again i'll definatly be buying one of these
ASRTECH (3:46:45 PM): thank you for your interest! it will be very similar to the DA kits as seen on G2IC.com

ASR does have a rear sway bar kit that mounts to the tow hook location. The kit is structurally sound and offers the biggest bar, but it seems like this kit interferes with most exhausts.

Re: Which asr subframe brace do I use for an ef
is there any other benefit for the rear lower tie bars? increased handling, stiffness or anything that would remotely make a difference? to the cars performance?
don't mean to thread jack, just wondering if it would help reinforce anything if you were running a different rear sway that it was not needed on (im running a st sway)

Wow, I'm reviving an ancient thread. I'm posting to correct some misinformation. The ASR (and similar) subframe braces are to prevent tear out at the control arm mounting point. The spots for the sway bar brackets is just secondary.
Here's what a tear-out looks like. Google Civic subframe tear for more info.
Alternate options to subframe brace? - D-series.org

As already mentioned in this ancient post, that type of tear out does not occur on the EF chassis because EF sway bar mounts to the frame rails and NOT the subframe.
That link shows picks of newer chassis where a heavier sway bar was used and mounted to the subframe (non-EF chassis).

EF's entire sub-frame can tear out or bend. Mine kinked.
