alternator over charged to 18 volts car died
got a 91 civic been autocrossing for 7 years or so. a few weekends ago my alternator over charged and burnt up some electronics like my aftermarket water temp gauge and died on track. swaped out ecu and got a new alternator still nothing. noticed my charge light nor the check engine light comes on with the key is turned to on position. fuel pump and ignition comes on inside the car so my new volts gauge comes and oil press light on cluster. also i tested volts to ecu and to injectors and there is power to those. any ideas what other electronics could have burnt up with too much volts?

Had this happen on a DD years ago - had to swap the Electronic Load Detector, which is part of the underhood fuse box. I swapped a complete box from a junk yard pull with slightly less miles. Lasted the next 50K before the car rotted out and had to go to a farm upstate. See the links below for more info.

My understanding is that the ELD might have caused my issue to begin with (I suspect yours as well), as the alternator's output is governed by the ELD. It took the battery, most of the running lights, a cheap inverter, of course the alternator, shorted the defrost relay (parasitic drain yay!), AND left me sitting on I-94 in BFV, MI looking like a dope. So it could have been worse I guess?
