Default AC problem, please help !

Just recently my AC stopped working. When I turn it on now it doesnt even start the compressor, I checked and its not engaging the clutch on the compressor. I also dont get the normal "bog down" I get when I turn it on. Im assuming its something electrical, but I couldnt find a fuse associated with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks !!

If it just recently happened then it might be that you need a recharge.
There is a prssure switch located on one of the A/C lines under the battery. That switch will not close if there isn't any pressure in the lines. The A/C will not work at all (the A/C switch will light up blue and that's it) if you are too low on freon. This protects the A/C system.

You can do a quick check to see if that's your problem. Don't run your car like this as it can damage the A/C.

Test 1 -
Unplug the connector from the pressure switch.
Put a paperclip in the plug (not on the switch).
Get in the car and leave the door open.
Turn the A/C on.
Turn the car on.
Quickly get out and see if the radiator fans are on.
Get in the car and turn the car off.

Test 2 -
Remove the paperclip and put the plug back on the pressure switch.
Get in the car and start it up with the A/C on again.
Check the fans.

The fans always operate when the A/C is on.
If you were low on freon then the fans would have came on in test a, but would NOT have worked in test 2.

mine stoped like that so i spent $200 on R12 freon and the ******* ******* didn't put oil in the system! 2 weeks later, my compressor LITTERY exploded and left chunks of metal on the freeway! I got this done at REDLANDS AUTO ELECTRIC SO DONT GO THERE!! they just rip u off. since i need a new compressor and various piping and a flush/charge, i converted to R134A at just under $1000 and now it will freeze me out. littery

Thanks for the replies, Ill try that test asap. Im hoping its not low cause I just filled it recently, that would suggest a leak If its not that tho, Im suspecting something electric because its not even triggering the compresser to come on, the clutch never engages. Any other suggestions or tests would be appreciated and Ill post the results asap.

4drEF - I took the battery out and there werent any AC lines running under it. There was one big one running next to it but it went right into the firewall, no switches that I could see. towards the front of the car there are a couple electrical plug ins, not sure what they are all about, here are a couple pictures, the first is of the battery tray without battery and the other is those sensors. I have a 90 CRX Si, would it be in a different place ?

That's weird.

Maybe a pic of that area, but zoomed out so more of the engine bay and radiator lines can be seen???

There are main lines that come out of the firewall... follow them.
If you can find the hard line that goes through the radiator support then you can find this switch.

One goes from the firewall, through the radiator support to behind the bumper, across the front of the car, and back into the engine bay through the radiator support on the other side.
That's the one you need to find. It has the switch on it.

The other tube runs from the firewall and makes it way to the compressor under the hood right behind the radiator.

You can see it in this pic. It #24.

It's near the radiator in that little spot between the radiator and battery below the battery.

R134A is the "new" style freon.

so by just draining out and doing a complete flush of the old freon and replacing it with the new one would make my a/c colder ?

I know its stupid, but pop your hood and look to see if your Condenser Fan Fuse is blown. I drained my freon and checked for leaks and it ended up being something as stupid as a flippin fuse.. K-eep I-t S-tupid S-imple, KISS! - Darrell

Just take it off you get less weight and that means you can go faster.

no u need a drier and most likly a new compressor. you also have to take the entire AC sytem apart and replace the orings b/c R134 has synthetic oil in it and it neet new o-rings in it so the oil and saturate the seals. I dont know this is what my macanic said. the total for my A/C swap was like $935 but take $300 of cause i needed a new compresor.

I will Try to get a pick or it's exact location up tomaro

You did make sure your belt was still on the compressor pulley right?

Yes the belt is still on, and its tight enough. I can see it spinning, but when I turn on the a/c the compressor doesnt actually engage.

Under your hood on the passenger-side fuse box. Its the top left most fuse, 15A - Condensor Fan.
