Don't try it without one, you'll give yourself a headache and maybe cry. 
After I painstakingly changed mine without a press on my prelude it lasted for a few months and the bearings went right out again. That was a few years ago so I guess it may have been from lack of experience, but either way it was so much more work than was necessary. After plenty of $$ and hours of work I ended up just going to the junkyard and paying $15 for a new spindle including hub, bearings & arm. Remember to torque everything properly. good luck

Removing the hub can be done with a hammer.
The inner race of the wheel bearing however will be attached on the hub. You will need a bearing separator w/ press or puller attachment to remove it. If you don't damage the race, then you can reuse it.
I've only driven in hubs w/ a press, but I suppose you could do it with a hammer. The inner race will have to be brace/supported though as the hub is installed.
