Default 91 civic hatch..starts bucking/code 1 not staying gone

alright so i just bought this ef and did a thurough tune up with the exception of the fuel filter (couldnt get the left 17mm off, filter kept spinning)

heres what the car is doing..

starts up everytime but once it gets warm, it wont go over a certain RPM (cant see which RPM it starts at, DX Model) in any gear. it starts to buck really bad and really only wants to move at WOT in any gear (with its mighty 65hp haha).

now, it was throwing a code 1 so naturally, i replaced the O2 Sensor with a Bosch unit from Autozone along with the tune up bits.

i reset the ecu via the negative battery cable (left it off for about 15 seconds) and drove it after. at first, the code didnt appear, although it was still doing the RPM/Bucking thing. I drove it again, later in the day and the CEL came on and it was still doing the RPM/Bucking thing.

From what i have already read, the ECU omits O2 readings at WOT but i've replaced the O2.

Contrary to that point, i also read Hondas dont really care for Bosch O2 sensors. is this true? if so, i will order an OEM sensor.

so my question is the above and also, is the bucking/RPM issue caused by the O2, in theory? or could it be the fuel filter also?

Thanks dudes..

In my ef I had the same issue, then I replaced the fuel filter. Little to no bucking now. Also something to consider though, replace the cap and rotor. Very cheap, might help you too. As for the o2 sensor I think it is wise to use an OEM o2 sensor.

Check your ignition timing too. I had a similar issue from the sounds of it when the revs were around the 2500 range. My timing was way advanced and everything seems fine now after adjusting.

i cannot beleive i forgot the cap and rotor lol thanks for that! replaced the fuel filter, waiting on the denso O2 from autozone (special order, comes tomorrow).

will check the timing once i get the O2 and cap and rotor in, thank you for the help! and yeah mine sounds like its in the 2500-3000 range but i cant be sure, the exhaust is stock and DX cluster doesnt help lol..

thanks again guys! will post back when i get things put on!

havent replaced the cap and rotor yet but its still giving me a code 1 and idling funny/high..could a vaccum leak or cap/rotor cause it to run weird and throw a code 1 (o2 sensor). The O2 is now a Denso unit.

So its throwing the same code with the OEM style o2 sensor.... Could be a wiring issue to the o2 sensor then. Have you tried resetting the ecu?

yes with the oem sensor. I forgot to reset the ecu

I'll try that along with the cap/rotor and see!

Had the same problem and it was the Ignitor.

FIXED:

the O2 - Cap/Rotor - Fuel Filter fixed it...

now...what can we do about my high idle? lol..theres no super obvious vacuum leaks..it idles at ~1500-1800 when warm and sometimes wonders..

thinking my iac is dirty? i cleaned the tb and no change..

If you have no surging adjust your throttle cable. If it's too tight, it would leave the throttle partially open and keep the revs in that range. I would know because this happened to me.
