Default 86-89 or 90-93 Axles for B18 Swap CRX??

Need some help understanding the difference and whether I should be using 86-89 Integra or 90-93 Integra axles on my car.

I have 91 CRX HF with knuckles out of who-knows-what.

- B18C1
- A1 cable tranny
- SK7 intermediate shaft (female axle end)

Currently I am using 90-93 Integra axles, Cardone Select P/N's 664062/63

I just found out that there is a different part for 86-89 Integras, Cardone Select P/N's 664024/25 and that they may be shorter.

I am experiencing a shudder problem under acceleration that may be due to axle binding. Would the 86-89 axles fit and is it worth a shot?

they will fit - the left side axles is about 1/4" shorter and the right side about 3/8" shorter

Alright I think I'm gonna order these and try it. Man I hope this solves the issue.

And that driving with the binding axles wouldn't have damaged the differential or anything else.

I found this video on how to check if you have the proper axle length, I think I am going to try this first...

Hopefully this will lead me in the right direction and I won't need custom axles.

Not yet, the car has been parked for a couple weeks now as I've been working out some electrical issues, among other things.

Probably tomorrow I am going to pull the axle nut off and check to see if they look too long based on the HASport method. I'll let you know what I find.

Measured my axles today the way the video says to. They are definitely a little long (these being 90-93 axles)

Roughly 1/8" long drivers side and 3/8" passenger side. Most of the shudder I feel is from the passenger side.

I am definitely ordering a set of 86-89's and will compare them. I've heard the inner splines are different somehow, so it may be necessary to swap the inner joint with the 90-93's. I'll post up once I get em.

Axles ordered this morning from Rock Auto, should be here by the end of the week for pending installation Friday afternoon.

I should mention I also have a new SK7 intermediate shaft I picked up a while ago that I will be doing at the same time. Mine feels okay but there is one very minor rough spot when turning the bearing, so I am doing it just to rule that out.

long story short i have a b16a ef hatch. i have had this clicking every time i turn left. its took me months of non stop repairing of the drivers side suspension. i also just put my sk7-j intermediate shaft in to with a new 1992 teg axle of rock auto. i called and talked to Marty and he said it was passenger side related.... sure enough fixed the passenger side axle and its not clicking anymore after 3 months. I would highly recommend putting that sk7 shaft in there it will all fit much better.

Already have an sk7 shaft installed. I got another sk7 shaft because I wanted to rule out a bad shaft as my vibration problem. It has a very slight rough spot on the bearing when spinning it by hand.

Alright I got the 86-89 axles today, so I might be able to get them put in tomorrow. Unfortunately the car is having other bigger issues right now, won't start. So I will need to get that taken care of first before I can even drive it to see if the axles change anything.

Updates soon.

I got em installed. It did not fix my vibration problem, but it does act differently now.

Also, the car seems to drive more smoothly while transitioning through turns. So I think the extra axle travel did help in some respect.

Confirmed that they fit tho, drivers side is about 1/4" shorter and passenger 1/2".

For your issue I would definitely try it, and you may only need a passenger side one. That's like $50, worth a shot in my opinion.

The more I mess with mine, I think the vibrating is actually due to the solid front motor mount the previous owner installed. Bolted traction bar straight to the transmission. So imma tackle that next.

Thought I would close this out by posting my findings after some trial and error with both sets of axles.

For my car, it turns out the best fitment is actually like this:

Driver's Side - 90-93 Axle (longer)
Passenger's Side - 86-89 Axle (shorter)

Why, I have no idea. I guess minor differences in the aftermarket engine mounts, swapped knuckles, and old/worn chassis and suspension components will cause some variances.

well I am glad you made a conclusion, but that still doesn't make any sense on why you feel vibrations? Marty from raxels also told me cheap axle cause vibrations..... ive had my b16a with no name motor mounts for about 2 years now and hasent given me any vibration problems. I used 92 da axles on both sides. Maybe it is another suspension component like you said. Hope you get it figured out buddy.

I've heard some other hypothesis about this. In another thread, a user said there are known problems with the machining done on cheap replacement axles, where they go into the transmission. So another thing to try would be rebuilt OEM axles from Honda.

Currently I am replacing my clutch and flywheel to see if that solves it. It has been said that a bad flywheel can cause symptoms similar to what a bad engine mount exhibits. So we'll see.
