1991 CRX Need ideas... Maybe B18 idk?...

Bought a 1991 CRX 1.5L SOHC last year and its about time to "juice" it up a bit. Fun car but, coming off a 1987 IROC has left me feeling the need for speed... Had ALOT of muscle cars in my time but new to the import thing. Just couldn't deal with the 6-8 MPG the IROC was getting (on 93 with octane booster, ugh!), so i sold it :( , and before you say anything, NO it was not stock... FAR from it in fact. Anyway, just looking for some advice on how to get the most bang for my buck. Judging by the 70 or so HP the stock CRX is putting to the ground, I think about 250HP should do the trick, LOL... Probably will be spending the money I save on gas for tires though. =) Really 150HP is probably a good start though that's why I was thinking maybe a B18.

Looks like crap cause it sat in my buddy's back yard for a couple years, but a fuel pump, battery, and a Main Fuel Relay later it lives... with only 140K miles! Interior is cherry except for a hole a mouse ate in the drivers seat.

a D16z6 turbo would be right at home in that.. Cheap too

Sell them rims and get your self some 15's and tires would be cheaper too

Re: 1991 CRX Need ideas... Maybe B18 idk?...

That's what Ive heard. D16. Turbo? Hmmmm... It that the VTEC. The z6 is, right? Not trying to go broke doing this, but wanna at least go... What am I looking at total cost? Also, yeah I know what you mean about the rims. They came on it obviously. Seems like the tires make the car REALLY squirrely. Its soooo light though! Not used to torque steer, LOL! I'm used to the usual musclecar fare. Owned a 1972 Boss 351 Mach 1. A 91 Mustang 5.0 coupe, and the IROC was last... Built em all myself=) Heavy cars though, it takes ALOT of $$$ to get a little speed. The CRX is tiny!!! Should be easy to get it to scream like a banshee. Just don't really know crap about what I am trying to do. There's just so much stuff on the internet you can go crazy... B16, B18, D16, H22, ...you know what I mean. Then once you decide on a motor you gotta know what block, etc. I am not trying to win the NHRA Nationals, or beat so and so's 600HP whatever, I just want to make a fun to drive car that still gets decent gas mileage (and at least some respect, lol). I know I'm gonna lose gas mileage, but anything is better than what i used to get so that isn't really too much of an issue. I already run 93 because it just seems to run a lot better, so that is not an issue either. With that said, I appreciate all the help I can get.

I like the idea... Just did a quick search on local Craigslist and right off saw two D16z6 motors w/transmissions and ecus for around $500 each. What is the max HP you can reliably get from that motor?

Re: 1991 CRX Need ideas... Maybe B18 idk?...

You can reliably make up to 200 whp on the stock internals with a healthy d series most will agree not to go higher than that before you need to build the block to handle the extra power

Re: 1991 CRX Need ideas... Maybe B18 idk?...

Cool. Thanks. That's about where I want to be...for now anyway. Thought I might go thru whatever I get just to make sure. As cheap as parts are for Hondas, it would probably be a good idea to just bite the bullet and rebuild it while it's sitting on the garage floor.

Do you know If that crx is the HF or the DX because you might have to do a dpfi to mpfi conversion

The Z6 is a great engine. If you tune it properly, you can easily achieve 250whp on 93 octane. Post a picture of the engine bay.

That's cool Tonio. I will put one up. I have to take one first. Its BONE stock except it had a K&N in it and no baffle and a Glasspack muffler (LOL!) when I got it, that's why I don't have any pics of the motor. Kinda blah... I thought about doing the DPFI to MPFI conversion and putting a header and maybe a Skunk2 intake on it for now, as long as I can use them on the z6 when I get one. Pretty sure I can, but idk...

It's a DX Red, sorry I'm slippin I didn't see your post. I'm pretty sure I do since it says DPFI on the screwed up looking down draft TB cover, lol. That's why I was thinking about going ahead and just slapping a header and exaust and intake and the MPFI conversion "whew" on there for now as long as I could use the stuff on a z6 later. Might even give a little jolt of life into that on the POS D15 in there now.

I would to ahead and go with the mpfi(plenty of write-ups, google is your friend) swap because you have to do it anyway in order to swap in any other engine,

The D series engines will take plenty of abuse and make your power goals to boot..

They will however need to be purpose built or they won't stay together. Atleast put some new bearings and rings while the engine is out and use ARP rod bolts to put back together. It'll stay together for sure at stock hp levels then.

And if you do go boost please don't use the vitara setup.. Shit is good for about 10k miles before you burn or crack a piston.

The D will make 400hp with a forged bottom end and stay together. So your goal of 250 is well within the ballpark.

Here's a setup Ive always been fond of..

http://www.carolinahondas.com/s-p-tu...cam-10psi.html

You can find good deals on that website from time to time too..

And plenty of good info on d-series.org as well..

Good luck!

If your looking at the Z6

Rods and pistons
http://p2p0.com/?wpsc-product=ycp-75...rods-combo-d16

1000cc injectors 290
Hondata S300 500
Wastegate, BOV, turbo, intercooler, pipes about 600 bucks

You will have a good strong motor.. And to LSx dude have you ever used vitara or are you just going off what a freind of a friend of a friend has said? I have seen plenty of vitara set ups last well over 20k miles.. mine included at about 400whp

I'm doing the same thing to my dpfi 91 hatch. The z6 can make just as much power as anything else and everything is cheaper :). If you don't need the car asap I would get vitara pistons n the super tech kit before putting it in and going boost.

H22 or f20b or h23a bluetop can be gotten from jdm importers for 700 without tranny go to a pick and pull junkyard and get a tranny from either a prelude or a accord with all extra stuff too (linkage, shift box, Da integra axles for a while, and any extra plugs off either obd0 mpfi car or obd1 plugs off any eg civic) order a nice set of mounts online and a phearable ecu with jumper harness(obd0-obd1) for dpfi car (makes easier when wiring mpfi), oh and don't forget the dpfi to mpfi swap and I promise you that you will take down your buddies 5.0 with confidence and never regret it.

Boosted Z6 will rape an H22 or H23
