Re: (rexman)
I honestly dont see the point of this thread...
they wanna put awd to a car with small Hp and even less torque.?
Hondas have pretty good traction as they are.. and if the op is serious about
going AWD, why not turn into another car maker for parts that will handle more HP and torque without exploding?
Again, I have seen conversion like this done many times..... in the VW world. and there is major and I mean MAJOR fabrication involved and since a lot of parts need to be costum made, The OP might as well use a HALDEX AWD system from an MK4 R32. It will handle about 800whp in stock form.
Yes, you read that right for the non believers. (preloquin makes a rear diff for that system that will allow it to engage the rear tires sooner.)
And you can get a sandwich plate made to match just about any engine to that tranny. Oh and since this setup uses a cable shifter, you can mount that anywhere.
just a thought... If you want links for ideas.. just ask.

From what i read the OP didnt want to go 4wd, he was showing how the 4wd system worked on cars that ALREADY came with 4wd... But maybe i just misunderstood. My civic handles alot better with the 4wd system, the weight distribution feels alot more centered.

Well i can barely get the front wheels slipping, without the rears engaging. Ive also taken it on sand at the beach, and if it where slow to react i doubt i would have gotten out anytime soon.
So in short, its almost instant.. (RealTime)

Re: (slowassWagon)
From my end I'm looking to put together an AWD sedan (GSR motor, CRV drivetrain) not for a track beast... just for a fun beater.
Been reading threads and writeups for a few weeks and it seems pretty straightforward now as far as what parts are needed, cutting and welding, and fabrication.
Truth be told I'm wanting to do this because it'll be a 'fun' car that will get me through the snow... I had to drive home in my S2k last night on 3-4 inches of snow (first time with her on snow so far) and about died 10-15 times over a 10 mile journey. AWD EF sedan should fare much much better, and hey if down the road she wants to get beefed up a little all the b-series stuff will be in place to do so.

Re: [FAQ] Real Time 4 Wheel Drive 4wd rt4wd
Is there any info on the earlier 1984-1986 wagon?
I had a 1985 model that had a vacuum actuator on the transmission. It did NOT have a viscous coupling on the driveshaft. I could actually turn power to the rear wheels on or off at the push of a button.

Re: [FAQ] Real Time 4 Wheel Drive 4wd rt4wd
All these foos talked about doing it to their ef's but no one ever actually did it. i wish i could do this to my hatch. but i doubt that i'd know, or have the money for this. someday im just going to pay someone to do it for me.

Re: [FAQ] Real Time 4 Wheel Drive 4wd rt4wd
Hey guys hate to resurrect this thread once again lol, but im doing this realtime four wheel drive in my crx, I have a wagovan 4wd waiting for me, now the plan is to use my d16a6 and mate it to the wagovan tranny, I do have a wierd question if i make my own driveshaft without the viscous coupling as one piece, throw a lsd in the rear and pull the front driveshafts would I have a fulltime RWD? epic motorsports did this to their eg and works great, if i cant do that then 4wd is fine, aswell my crx has rear disk brakes how does that work considering the wagovan had drums, are the hubs different? can I use the cv shafts in the rear or would I have to get another pair of front wheel hubs for the rear that support the cv shafts?

Re: [FAQ] Real Time 4 Wheel Drive 4wd rt4wd
You'll be swapping the rear hubs as well, so no more disc. Not a big deal though as rear disc is mostly a cosmetic mod anyway. As long as the fronts are "slipping", as they will with no axles in place, the rear's turn. So yes, no front axles = rwd. Use the wagovan rear cv axles.

So yes it would be RWD.

Re: [FAQ] Real Time 4 Wheel Drive 4wd rt4wd
Great post.
Looking at pictures of the CRV t-case, it appeared as if it was a chain-drive unit. It's to know that Honda is using a viscous-coupling unit instead.
How well does the 4wd in these vehicles operate after 200,000 miles? Is it still going to be able to quickly engage the rear wheels, even to near full center diff. lockup (near 50/50 power split between the front and rear drive shafts)?

Make that 4x!
lol
My '89 has over 300k. The original VC works perfectly, instantly, and without any fuss. If you try and abuse it on dry pavement it might squeak the front tires, but that's it. It just goes.
I don't think you can really say there is a power split since the front is getting full power at all times. It remains directly mechanically connected. It just has to share with the back when the VC engages.
One other thought for anyone wanting to convert their FWD to awd. You are probably going to need a gas tank that will accommodate the rear differential. On the wagons there is a bumper up in there also, so check your donor vehicle.

Re: [FAQ] Real Time 4 Wheel Drive 4wd rt4wd
Just for clarification I wasn't doing a rt4wd mod, I had an 89 civic wagon 4wd, the OEM manual, and a honda master mechanic uncle so I was just passing on information. Glad to see this thread kick some *** again. I still have the OEM manual (1989 civic wagovan) so if anyone wants any pages scanned in let me know and I'll get on it.
