New to me CR-V

Hey guys, I don't post much, but my friend was selling his 99 crv 5sp AWD, so he called me up, and I decided I needed this, Ha ha. Here she is in all her glory, needs a couple things but not sure how far I will go with modding since it's my new DD.

Feel free to make comments, and maybe even suggest mods for it. Also I got a B16 head and a 99-00 SI comp with it, so not sure if I want to go CRVtec right away or wait, because right now it runs really well and I don't want to compromise that at all...

Thanks for looking

Re: New to me CR-V

Well i didnt have much time yesterday to explain much about the car. It has 215K miles, but mechanically is increadibly sound. Last night me and the previous owner put new U joints in the drive shaft, that was fun.... It was easy, just time consuming.

anyone have any suggestions for exhaust or intake, or any mod they think is worth while?

Where did you get the ujoints? I have emailed rockford and havent gotten a response yet.

Re: New to me CR-V

Fiend, thanks, lol. im thinking it needs a small lift, might happen this winter with tax money.... ive been researching the rt4wd system, and monitoring others, and think im going to work on the tcd some.

as for the bearings, ill ask the previous owner, he bought them off ebay, $90 for two....

Re: New to me CR-V

Replacing the u joints isnt just a drop in replacement. the old ones have have to be cut out with a torch and then some dremeling has to be done to some notches in every bore....

Re: New to me CR-V

I need to do my ujoints soon so thanks for the tip on where to look! I have a full shop at my disposal and have a pretty good hang of getting staked u joints out.

Re: New to me CR-V

Ok just for some info, on ebay if you search under ebay motors-parts and acc-trans and drivetrain- for crv u joint, they are on there. One seller (thecvman), has a 99.8 positive feedback, and he sells them for 46.95 a piece.

Whats funny is they say they are direct replacement and no tools are needed, ha ha ha.

Re: New to me CR-V

Well i did some very slight mods to the car, no pics right now since im on my phond, but i added a CAI, did some sawzawing where the old box was, to get the filter where i wanted it. Also i added HIDs, which were awesome, for one day, til a ballast died on me! Then i also picked up a set of snow tires for her, close to stock size, nothing larger.

Im going to start looking into the tcd case, i was thinking i might be able to steal the rear diff out of a pilot, but i cant really find info on what the rear gear is, vs the crv rear gear. So its looking like modding the stock case will have to do for now.

Ill post a few pics up when i get the chance.

Re: New to me CR-V

Here are some pictures. I'm not a fan of buying parts I can make, so this intake was just thrown together will left over intercooler piping. It's 3", and fit right into the stock tube. EDIT: I have put on clamps since the pic....

And here is the difference between the stock lights and the HIDs, This is actually how the car is lit right now due to the company sending me a bad ballast, ha ha

Re: New to me CR-V

Well, did some more work on her tonight, completely converted her back to fwd, so i can start working on the transfercase. everything comes out easily, but after removing the axles i decided to seperate the outer cv joints and put them back on, because they might be holding the bearings in place.

I didnt take much for pictures, but if i can get them to upload ill get them up tomorrow. Also tomorrow i will get a 1-3/8" socket so i can start taking the case apart. hopefully i can get in there and shim the relief valve and get some better engagement. we will see. Thanks for looking

make sure to report changes made as well as take lots of pictures/video. :)

Re: New to me CR-V

I was going to do the same thing to keep the bearings together, in theory there shouldn't be a problem doing that. In practice is it all good?

dueces 10-23-2012 10:58 AM

Re: New to me CR-V

Yes it is perfectly fine with just the outer cv's on. Test drove it last night after the removal and its fine, also drove it to the hardware and auto parts store today.

I have shimmed the relief valve, and got it all back together. i will put it all back in today, but might not put the driveshaft in til tomorrow so i can give the rtv sealant some good time to harden.

Pictures to come when i get to a real computer.

I used about .270" worth of shims. i read another member did 9mm, which is .394 or so, but i tried that and the casing wouldnt even go back together with that much in there.

If this doesnt work, a new set of clutches may be in order, as these have 215,000 miles on them.

Re: New to me CR-V

Let us know how the shimming goes, this might be nice to engage the 4wd sooner. Also is the relief valve hard to get to?

Re: New to me CR-V

You dont even have to remove the diff from the car if you dont want to, i did because its easier. Its pretty easy to get to, you will see when i post my pics. im going to reassemble the car right now, so i may or may not get the pics up tonight.

Re: New to me CR-V

Ok guys, I have finished putting it back together. The rear tires don't break loose like either if my old AWD cars(03 Evo and 06 A4 Quattro), but acceleration on dry pavement has definately improved! I didn't have too much time to experiment with it, but I was trying to check if the rears would break loose in grass, and I don't think they ever did, but I could feel the rear coming online almost instantly.

So getting back to the "how to", Ill start with the diff being removed from the car, because quite frankly it's just unbolting it, the driveshaft, and the axles to get it out.

So the first thing to do is to break loose the nut on the front of the case. It's a 1-3/8" or 35mm, which ever you want to buy. I tapped out the dented in area with a punch, and used my impact to get the nut off. Behind the nut is a steel washer, behind that is a nylon washer, and behind that is an o-ring, set those off to the side. This all holds the piece that attaches to the driveshaft. I had to use a pulley puller to seperate it, but I just think it was a little stuck.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23102552.jpg

From here you can remove the 8 5/16 bolts from the casing. I'm sure they are metric, but 5/16 works fine. This is what you will see:

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23102624.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23102613.jpg

The clutch pack assembly is connected to the splined shaft seen above, and the whole clutch pack assembly just pulls straight off.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23102837.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23104145.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23102847.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23104451.jpg

With that out of the way, you can see the small attachment that drives the front oil pump. Pull this off.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23103011.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23102957.jpg

Now the assembly that is left is what holds the front and rear oil pumps and all the oil passages that control how the clutches are engaged. It pulls out by removing the 3 5/16 bolts at the base of it. Remove them and pull this straight out.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23103656.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23103800.jpg

This is the bottom side of what was just pulled off. Again there are three 5/16 bolts to remove. While your removing them, you will see the spring we want to shim is pushing the casing apart.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23110144.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23110150.jpg

All the ball bearings will stay right where they need to when you separate this pulling it straight upwards. The long spring you see is sitting on the ball that is the relief valve.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23110520.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23110511.jpg

This is what I purchased from my hardware store. I took the spring with me and got a nylon bushing that fit inside the spring so the spring would not be able to walk around like it appears it can stock. Also pictured is how I put them in, and what it looks like installed.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23115516.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23115622.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23120504.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23120528.jpg

And from here I reassembled the whole thing. I had heard someone shimmed this a total of 9mm, but when I tried, the case would not go back together flush. I ended up using .270" or so if you check the bottom of the bushing and the 4 washers I used.

Everything back together.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23122555.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23125025.jpg

Here is my temp CV assembly. I just used a sandwich bag and zip ties to hold in the grease, worked just fine. I wouldn't recommend this for more than a day though, ha ha.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-22211249.jpg

And here is my CRV sitting behind my wifes 2010 CRV. I'll take mine any day of the week!

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-22164755.jpg

And here are my cheap $175 Snow Tires on Steelies.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-18220240.jpg

And I'm spent.... Thanks for looking guys. I have a couple other ideas I would like to try to make it a perminent AWD, but I need to do some more research first on if it's a good idea or not.

Re: New to me CR-V

OH another thing. The only thing that drives the rear oil pump is the pin seen here:

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/...0-23110150.jpg

This goes through the main shaft, and it will fall out while removing the oil pump housing, just make sure you don't loose this.

Re: New to me CR-V

ive heard there is a 2:1 gearing ratio in the rear diff, so perm AWD is a no go. Very detailed and good pictures. Ill definately be doing this mod. Thanks a lot.

Awesome write up, let us know if this makes a real difference and if its worth doing.

Re: New to me CR-V

Thanks guys! The rear is like 2.53:1, but there is a reduction in the front transfercase, so it still drives the fronts and rears the same.

Well after i did the quick right up, i decided to go mess around, and after playing around on pavement, gravel, and wet grass, it has definatey improved how the rear end behaves! if your willing to have your car fwd for a few days, definately do this! while your at it, get some new fluid if yours hasnt been changed in a while.

I climbed a hill that was about a 30° slope, and the rear instantly came online while going up it.

my next idea, as long as there is some sort of center diff in the front tranny/transfer case, is to lock the clutch plates to each other by drilling holes through all the plates, and pinning them all so they never move. it will work as long as there is a center diff, otherwise it will probably just start breaking things....
