Icon5 Just the Clutch, or the whole Compressor? Thoughts?

Im not a car guy so sorry if I explain some stuff incorrectly.

Have a 2007 Honda CRV, 2WD, 180K miles. AC Compressor went out a 5 months ago, seized up-no longer engages, did not want to bother replacing it for $1,100, so I just go without AC. Car was still fine, it's just no AC anymore.

However, in just the past week a loud screeching noise started, high pitch. It went away after a day, but now it's a loud foreign motor sound instead. You would immediately recognize it's not right. Took it to Honda dealership, they said they believe it is the bearings on the compressor after taking it apart, I need to replace the compressor and the pulley belt that the compressor turns, all that stuff. Because if that goes out, it's obviously connected to the power steering pump, alternator, and water pump. So it's vital.

But my question is, if it's the bearings, wouldn't that just be the clutch part? Not the whole compressor? So I could just replace the clutch and the pulley belt? And then I would still not have AC because the AC part of the compressor is dead, but at least everything else is fine right?

Thanks

Depends on which bearings failed. The fact that it siezed suggests that the whole compressor may need to be replaced. The only way to really know will be to take it off and determine what failed.

A stealership won't analyze the part and attempt a repair. Instead they just replace the part. If it is simply the compressor clutch then you're looking at a cheap and easy fix.

Honda AC compressors have a reputation for failing. If you determine the compressor is dead then I personally would do some research on an aftermarket replacement with a warranty and buy that. It will be much cheaper. If you DIY this you can buy all the tools you need to do the job, plus the parts, and spend way less than $1000...

Oh Ok, interesting, I thought all the bearings were in just the clutch part?

I did not find a Denso brand one that fits my car. The one on Amazon says it does not fit mine: https://www.amazon.com/DENSO-471-705...ype=automotive

But I found this one for $356 that matches: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...EPH191183.html

My car is a 2007 Honda CR-V EX-L 4 Cyl 2.4L
