ZOMG, Gutted Air Box or not!?!?!

ZOMG, Gutted Air Box or not!?!?!
So I have a 99 Civic Si. I currently have a AEM V2 Intake (I know, im a sucker). Anyways. I was thinking about selling it and going back to my stock intake box. Do you think it would help at all to leave the lower resonator out? As in the part that actually sits down in the bumper. This way its just a hole in the bottom of the stock box pointing right down into the front bumper. Honestly I have looked in there after I have driven in rain to see if its wet, looks pretty dry, plus it would be a far reach for water to get up into that hole, through the filter and into the motor. Any ideas or suggestions on the topic?

its prefilter im sure that being off would not damage the motor unless u submerged ur car. u could cap it off with a pvc cap and a coupling im sure if u wanna be safe.

This is how it would sit in the car, with that hole on the bottom open.
This is what you would see if you were looking upwards from inside the bumper.
And this is how it looks if I leave the U pipe/resonator on

if u leave it off i would make sure ur fender liner and slash guard are installed so no large amounts of water can be splashed up there. but being its prefilter i dont think u will have many problems. i have a cold air intake that has no by pass valve and it never bothers it when it rains . the filter has to almost be fully submerged to destroy the motor. hope that helps

Not true, Im rebuilding my ej8 from sucking up water and i didnt submerge mine, i hit a rut in the road and splashed water and locked the tires up and all.
Mine still runs but i think i either bent a valve, rod, or cracked the head cause it runs horriable with a very slight knock. only really heard at idle. ( and its not a valve tap )

splashing water on it is pretty much submerging it. just regular rain would not do this. i usally prefer not to run mine in the rain that much anyway i ride my second car

I run my EH2 the same way. Just the filter box and up tube. I bought it with a eBay CAI and the OEM box didn't come with the lower piping. I have never had any issues.

I'm sure it would be fine but I don't think it will give you anything performance wise if that's what you're after. It maybe slightly louder at WOT.

I ran my stock box without resonator for awhile, just cut that u- tube in half so it's getting cold air, but without a larger exhaust your not likely to see much gain.
I'll buy your AEM off you will it fit a 93 SOL? ?? maybe not
I've been running an EBAY CAI for over 2 years no problems here, you really have to submerge your filter to damage the engine
I've hit HUGE puddles in Florida where it rains allot, just make sure to seal the area around the bumper and splash guards well and don't run into 2 feet deep water. I even put some weather stripping around the headlight where there was some small gaps, it's pretty water tight in there only a 2 feet deep puddle would do damage.

I've been running without the resonator and J-pipe for years with no problems at all. I even came really close to hydrolocking once - I had water up over the hood, but the car kept running.
When I pulled over to check the damage, I had water in the sparkplug wells and the bottom of the airbox, but no damage.

Get an AEM bypass valve I just got one, the valves stay closed until your filter is submerged.
I always though the AEM valve sucked in warm air and defeated the purpose of a cold air intake but my friend showed me a gutted one and you can see the flaps that remain closed under normal driving conditions then open if the filter is fully submerged.
