Default ZC vs. D16Z6, same power different results...why?

Just wondering, if the ZC and D16Z7 are supposed to be putting out the same power, why is the zc usually faster. I understand the difference between DOHC and SOHC, but does it make that much of a difference. I might be anwsering my own question, but is it because of the VTEC. Like because it doesn't engage untill 5,000 some-od RPM while the ZC has the power all the time. Or is it because one is DOHC and one is SOHC.
