Default ZC DOHC swap into my 1993 Civic DX Sedan (yes, I searched)

I have searched and the word ZC seems to get dropped in searches...

I am looking to throw a cheap motor into my beater which has a tired 1.5L. I figure an OBD1 ZC DOHC is my best bet and will be running a D16Z6 tranny to avoid axles issues.

I need some confirmation on items:

1) ECU - Will a PR4 (93 teg LS) ECU work?

2) Motor mounts - Sounds as though, my current mounts and mounts that come with the motor will work for the most part?

3) Exhaust manifold/header - Will it bolt right up? Any aftermarket choices? What do I need to do to make that work?

4) What timing belt and water pump should I use with this swap? If I lose a headgasket, what kind of headgasket would I use?

Thanks!

Also, DOHC ZC seems to have cam sensor built into the dizzy. Is this available as a replacement or is this piece impossible to get in the US? Thanks!

I had a zc in my 90 crx si. this was a few years ago so im only 90% sure

timing belt is off the 88 prelude 2.0 si. part number 14400-PK2-004
the water pump is from a 89-91 crx part number 19200-P01-004
the exhaust manifold will fit. i think its like 1 or 3mm off you can port it.
head gasket is from a 89 integra.
your motor mounts i think will fit if not your gonna have to change your driver side upper mount at least you would have on the obd 1 zc

however i would get the d16z6 for convenience

1) It'll start it - but it'll run like **** - get the right ECU or run a DOHC ZC basemap on a chipped OBD-I ECU.

2) Your motor mounts should work fine.

3) The header bolt pattern is the same - I'm 99% sure it'll clear the oil pan - not 100% though. As for aftermarket headers - any D series header will be fine - might wanna stick to the cheap side though like DC Sports or even an ebay brand as the ZC is a cheap crap motor that won't build jack **** worth of power with bolt ons such as header, exhaust, and intake without spending an unreasonable amount.

4) No idea.

every thing is correct as for the question about the dizzy you can use all your stock internals from the d16 single cam in the dohc obd1 dizzy, ive actually done it before.....as for the ecu issue an obd1 ecu will work fine on the zc ive used even b16 ecus on zc's and the ran a lil rich but they ran cooooooooo

There's a difference between what "works" and what "works right."

There's people running B16's on P28's.

Does it work? Yeah.

Does it work right? Absolutely not.

Stop half-assing things and get the right ECU. The ZC is not meant to run the same as an LS. What the ****!?

Thanks, guys. I want to do it right, thats for sure. Thats my personality. But, I am spending all my money on my Eb-oh for next year and want to just have this civic running right - So, I figured cheap ZC swap will do.

I was looking at a B18B, but getting motor mounts for another 300 bux sets me back more.

- I can get ZC and D16Z6 tranny shipped for under 1100.
- I will get a megan header
- get magnaflow exhaust
- get test pipe fabbed up
- I will get my ECU chipped and mapped by Kenji.

I need to figure out what t-belt and water pump to put in it before I drop the motor in. Sounds like d-series will work per what y'all are saying

Any idea on the distributor...Thats what holding me back from buying one - hate to buy one only to realize that I cannot get a replacement dizzy for it down the road.

Thanks all!

well from my own personal experience an ls ecu gets the job done, maybe not the right job but it works if your on a budget..... as for the distributor try contacting street imports out of new york they are the only ones that i know of that carry new and rebuilt zc twin cam obd1 distibutors...... but if your really on a budget like i said all the internals bolt right up to the zc twin cam obd1 distributor.... but you have to make sure its obd1 not obd0 cause the obd0 has an external cam sensor and will not work

If you want the right ECU, the middle three part number digits are P29.

IMO stick with a SOHC ZC VTEC or the D16Z6 - easier swap, and IMO better engines and easier/cheaper to repair and upgrade later.

The DOHC ZC is a turd IMO. I've gotten better results tossing high domed P29 pistons in an otherwise stock D16A6 non-VTEC engine from the 88-91 Si.

BTW:

The engine should come with the right distributor. My shop did the OBD1 Zc (they are out there) and the swap came from Steve at http://www.hmotorsonline.com and it came with the correct OBD1 DOHC ZC distributor and ECU.

Good luck if you really go DOHC ZC...
