Default YOUR thoughts on a Del Sol

This is totally weird. I just read a post about a Del Sol and some guy had a lot to say about his Del Sol. I have an 01 PY R and its going under a JDM makeover. Right now, i am car-less and i was cruising around with a friend of mine and we just suddenly got on the Del Sol. I saw like 6 of them in 1 day. we were cruising out in the burbs of Chicago and it hit me. OKay, its a small 2 seater. Its a hard top convertable. Rear window rolls down ( THe coolest feature of this car ). Sounds like fun for the summer. I got my R Xmas of 01 with 16k on it, The car was in mint condition. Now, roughly 6 monthes later its got almost 33k! I cruise the fuq outta that car. I think its time for another ride. a nice little beater. I basically wanna know what the rest of the world thinks of a del sol. Not from a performance standpoint. I could care less. I drive an R and i eat V6's for breakfast. I just wanna know driving impressions, technicalities about the car. Basically a general idea of it.
Thanks guys!

I got one. I like it alot. Its great in the summer. Inside its not to tight, just enought room, and the seat are comfortable. Its a good choice.

If you are going to get one, I would say at least get an Si, so you have a little pep.... if money isn't an issue I would definitely say get the DOHC Vtec.

They are alot of fun, and definitley the Targa Top, and rear window rolling down are nice.

Take care...

if you come from a R ..

dont expect too much from a del sol ..

wait .. i should rephrase that ...

i meant "del sol are 2 seater civics" as in ...
they are both base on the same chassis
same chassis = some parts are interchangable
and the things apply to civics can be also apply to del sol
like "civics are slow" , del sol are often regard slow also
but they both can be fast with $$

however an open top car can never be stiffer then a car base on the same chassis with a roof, no matter how many underbody bracing you add ...
but .. never say never .. right ?

The VTEC is a hybrid then... but stock.

A Del Sol is NOT just a 2 seater Civic.

The Del Sol isn't as rigid as the Civic, and it weighs more than the average hatchback too.

Not hating, but just letting you know that the Del Sol needs a lot of work to handle like a good hatch.

My Mom has a nice 1997 Del Sol S.

One of my good friends has a 99 C5 with a 150 shot and an exhuast on it and yet he went out and bought a del Sol Si for fun. So, I can easily believe this guy wants one too.

Yup, its true. Any open top car is gonna be less stiff than a roofed one. Its also heavier than the hatch (del Sol VTEC is about 2500 lbs). However, if you aren't concerned about all out performance, and have some change laying around (I mean, you're talking about getting a del Sol as a cruiser, and you already have a nice car, so I figure you're not hurting for cash!), get a del Sol. I'd pick either that or a Miata. Having driven both (my sister has an early model Miata), I would still pick the del Sol, even if its just for the fact that I'd rather not have a soft top.

For a set of rims plus about $1500 or so, you can make the del Sol handle like a mother. Plop in some quality coilovers, and stiffen the chassis with bars and you'll love it. Add an ITR rear sway and you'll be golden and love it. Neutral handling, nice off-gas oversteer. Perfect.

Driving impression.....personally, though the del Sol and Civic may share a common foundation, the del Sol really does have a fabulous cockpit feel where you're wrapped inside the car. Everything is perfectly positioned for a driver (aside from pedals where the gas is too far for easy heel-toe, but that's every car, and fixable).

I've had my 93 Si for almost 5 years. I picked it up with 28,500 on the clock, and put on and extra 60K before I hydrolocked the old SOHC VTEC motor (Iceman plus lake-sized puddle = ). Swapped in a B16A2, modded the suspension some more and now its a fabulous tight handling daily driver (though I do have another car for my stupid long commute) which will take 8200 rpm shifts all day every day. I doubt I'll ever sell the Sol.......

Hope that helps. If you have the time, I'd recommend getting an older Si model, drop in a B series swap and go from there. No regrets here....

BTW:

I wasn't ripiing on Del sol's at all, but merely pointing out that even though they are based on the same car, they aren't as similiar as you might think.

Yeah, the trunk space is unbelieveable for that little car.

"del Sol VTEC is about 2500 lbs. "

My Si weight was about 2290 on the scales at the petersburg pro solo that was only 20 pounds heavier than a friends 93 Civic Si. That was with the top out , spare, jack and floormats out of the car. Also the VTEC sol is a lot differnt that the standard sol, it coms with from upper and lower sturt tower bars rear lower bar and bigger sway bars all around.

The del Sol is the US name for the 3rd gen CRX......it was still called the CRX in the rest of the world. Yes, it is heavier than the older models, but also has the targa top.

On another note, does anyone know if the jump (I'm presuming there was an increase) in weight for the 4th to 5th gen Civics was as high as the jump from the CRX to the del Sol?

Get the sol as a nice 2nd car. I made my ex-girl buy one and it is nice. The seating and dash are really nice.

ok, i've owned many cars in the past..i currently own a 95 del sol VTEC. I absolutely love the car. it handles very well for a stock car..the B16 is an awesome motor for the car, even though there's little torque it really does scream. love the targa top..love the rear window, love the seats, love the trunk space even with the roof stored...it's a GREAT car for under 7K bucks. and chicks dig it too
