Yet another Syncromesh post

Ok, this isn't a 'should i use syncromesh' or 'what's FM mean?' post, just need some words from folks who've been using it and changed their fluid already...

How well does the syncromesh fluid drain/evac from the tranny during a normal shadetree fluid change? After pulling my EJ1 out of a pond many of the fluids were contaminated with water including the tranny (stuff was like choc. milk). Just added the penzoil syncromesh today to try to be nice to the tranny for a bit. in another 1000 miles i'll be changing it again (and the oil & all filters etc) and I just would like to know if this fluid sticks in the tranny more?

Has anyone who has used the syncromesh or syncromesh FM and had any problems doing a full fluid drain/flush?

It's all the same to me. I've noticed no difference between syncromesh, oil, or Honda MTF.

good to hear, just hoping I don't have to flush this like I did the engine already. water + engine = nasty

You are supposed to use Synchromesh FM (FM = Friction Modified), and not the regular one. The FM comes in a regular oil bottle while the regular comes in a shorter rounder bottle. I've used FM in my ITR tranny and it is a lot smoother than Honda MTF.

I am running Honda MTF right now since I had to change my axle and didn't want to spend another $14 a bottle. The viscosity is like MTF and changes really easily. Oh, and it doesn't smell too pleasant either.

I never used the FM. I used the regular Syncromesh in the cylindrical bottle and it took care of the grind in my D-series tranny. Shifted like butter.

The honda MTF works better than just putting motor oil in, thats for sure.

Your getting screwed if I recall correctly I got 3 quarts for about 24-28 for all 3. The Pennzoil is virtually the same stuff as the GM and it is only about $5/ quart.

As for the OP's question should come right out like Honda MTF, at least it did when I drained mine. I have used Honda MTF, GM synco, and the Pennzoil and they all drain the same https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

My S4c tRanny was grinding pretty hard before. I tried the GM SYNCHROMESH and it help out just a little bit. Maybe I should try the GM SYNCHROMESH FM?

vlc92189 07-17-2006 08:28 PM

i know i keep asking questions.. but its starting to worry me...

well today me and a buddy were messing around... and when i was shifting from 2nd to 3rd.. it eflt like grind.. but it was very quick... but it only happens after like 6200... is that aa real grind? or is that just the synchronizers?

and to the Ek guy, and to others.. does most people third gear do this or what? thats what it seemed lik.e.

and is this pennzoil syncromesh? chevy synrcomesh? or GM synrcomesh.. and can i just go to a local autoparts store.. or do i have to go the dealer?

sorry for being a newb

vlc92189 07-17-2006 09:05 PM

ttt!

Sketch_hs 07-17-2006 09:30 PM

friction modified syncromesh made a HUGE HUGE difference in my b16 tranny as was worth every penny! make sure you change it out like every 20k the fluid seems to get... not as good after that

vlc92189 07-17-2006 09:53 PM

can i buy it at autozone? and what brand is it

JDM B16A 07-18-2006 12:48 PM

Re: (vlc92189)

You can't buy GM SYNCHROMESH FM at AutoZone. you ahve to go to a GM dealership near you. Go into PARTS department and ask them for bottles of GM SYNCHROMESH FRICTION MODIFICATION. It should cost you somewhere between 30 bucks. I can GURANTEED you it'll help with the grind. It won't fix it. But it'll cover it up enough for you to drive around for the next 20k mile. That should give you enough time to save up for a new TRANNY. Don't get the wrong idea bout riding around with a fukk up tranny and thinking FM can cover it up forever. Remember that the tranny fluid is just a fluid. NOT ANYTHING THAT CAN PUT TEETH BACK TO YOUR SYNCHROS!!!! So get taht fuking shit FIX!!

I like Syncromesh more then Honda MTF. Although the price isnt as competitive as the Honda MTF https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif
