yet another "i need help" topic (transmission or clutch)
ok so i have a 95 civic ex 2 dr
d16a motor
d16z6 transmission
competition clutch stg 2
10Lb fly wheel
the problem that I'm having is well... crazy
the clutch will not release the transmission sometimes
like I'll be driving just normal not ******* it or anything
come to a stop light and go stop while holding in the clutch but in first gear
the RPM's drop till the car dies.
i have to start the car in gear because if it's not in gear it will not go into gear once started.
to shift i have to rev match
and than it will just stop out of no where and drive normal.
i have bleed the clutch but it's still happening 2-3 times a week
sometimes 2-3 times a day
it's 100% random
i don't know transmissions but it sound to me like a problem with the pressure plate
it only has like 10k on the new clutch assembly
IDK
thanks for any/all help

Re: yet another "i need help" topic (ek forever guy)

check slave and master cylinders. id say go ahead and replace the slave because its cheap at the parts store anyway and if it happened to be the problem you got the fix for like $8 and no headache. if that isn't it then move on from there. check the master and the clutch lines for any leaks where air can get in. any funny noises coming from the tranny/clutch area?

Re: yet another "i need help" topic (jonathan13)
no funny noises
i replaced the slave like 1-2 years ago
there are no leaks in the lines because if air can get in than fluid can get out
and i have not needed to refill fluids in a wile

yeah i also believe its the slave cylinder. I had the same problem before and i took the tranny out but it was just the slave cylinder. just replace it to be sure.

so the slave is something that needs to be replaced every year or so?
and would cause it to do this randomly?

Slave shouldnt need to be replaced, it lasts a good while when used normally. All this to me sounds like you may have come across a deficient pressure plate, or (not to say your a bad mechanic) you may have accidently installed something wrong with the clutch disk. This sounds allot like my good friends younger brother's problem with his H22, turns out he had put the clutch disk in backwards.

Re: (97Ej6mike)
it has been installed for about 10k
the problem just started in the past 1k
if the clutch disk was in backward wouldn't i have noticed this sooner?
i had a very reputable person install it for me because
a previous shop installed it and chose to forget the throw out Bering
so i know the install is not the problem.
i did however replace the transmission at the time
and it was a cheep junk yard replacement so that could be the problem as well
but there has been no problems for the last 9k miles.
and... i still lost. lol HELP!!!
thanks for all the input so far everyone

Ok well that rules out those few things then.

wow still no clue
bump
what are some things that i could check just to rule things out
process of elimination is expensive but it works

Re: (95jeremie)
i know this kinda sounds like bullshit but i have seen it happen before, check the o ring in the lid where you fill your clutch fluid at!! i seen them out of the groove or even messed up and them do the same thing
good luck
good luck

shift fork maybe? and you did say it was a junkyardtrans. it might have decided to go. get another one and swap em out. maybe the main bearing went on it? but i would split em apart if it was me to check the clutch. you dont know till you do it.

If its not clutch/flywheel/pressure plate, and its not master / slave cylinder, it has to be the trans itself, thats my only solution i can figure. Wheres bense or slowcivic2k? they are good on these issues with trannys.

wrong, his shifter cables were bad and a bolt fell off the flywheel. anyway i had this problem when my master cylinder went...i would push in the pedal and put it in gear but as i was sitting the fluid would leak out and it would stall.

Re: (95jeremie)
youre goin to have to take the tranny out and inspect everything its possible the pressure plate couldve warped causing it to only clamp a certain amount of pressure at a time....also i know its a know brainer but make sure you used the right alignment key for your clutch disk

Re: yet another "i need help" topic (95jeremie)
This definitely sounds like a clutch release issue, and there could be a few things responsible for this. It is important to understand clutch disc design, so you can understand how this happens.
Here are several things that can cause this:
Clutch disc is sticking to the splines on the input shaft, which allows the clutch to interface with the flywheel, even when the clutch is pressed. Tends to be a problem on older Honda's, if your input shaft splines have burrs or rust on them, this can easily cause this problem. Always test the clutch on the input shaft first, to ensure it slides freely, and that it is the right spline. A dab of white lithium grease on the splines helps to prevent this problem.
The clutch disc cushion spring is not working, making centrifugal force pull the clutch towards the flywheel, and rub it while the clutch is pressed. This spring is a wave spring that sits in between the two friction surfaces, if you look at it, it will be wavy looking, its job is to kick the disc off the flywheel when the clutch is pressed.
The slots in the friction surface (pressure vents) are not allowing ample ventilation, and contributing to suction force holding the disc to the flywheel. Not very likely unless the clutch had a lot of miles on it, if its a puck clutch ignore this.
Pressure plate could be defective or warped, causing a drag even when depressed. You should be able to feel that in the pedal.
I don't know what style clutch you have, a full faced clutch or a puck type, but a lot of puck type clutches will not have the vents because the areas without pucks provide ventilation. Most also have no wave spring to kick itself off the flywheel, that is a performance exchange so the clutch grabs solid, with no cushion.
Since it has enough grab to stall the car, I would say the disc is stuck on the input shaft. but a combination of all of this can also cause it, this just seems more likely.
