I have a b16a sirII in my eg hatch. I am having some probs right now, but one with my tranny. It seems that the leak is coming from the axel seal. Well I talked to B18C5-EH2 and he asked about my tranny code. I told him what the sticker said. It says Y80 - (bunch of numbers here) . There are also bar codes underneath the number. Now B18C5-EH2 is informing me that that code belongs to an integra. And that the tranny for the b16 is gonna be like Y21 or S4C or something. Well, what is it? Anyone have proof???? I'd like to get the right tranny.

well i got my answer! It is an integra!!! Nippon told me so!!! Well, they are telling me it is better with the lower gearing. They said it can't be the ls because they don't get the ls motors or tranny. They won't give me the right tranny. So the guys that put it in will trade me a 99 si tranny for my gsr. Should I keep the gsr??? Or should I get the si???? Please tell me.

For a stock or all motor B16A you really NEED the shortest gearing possible. The longer-geared GS-R and LS trannies were meant for motors with a broader powerband, like the B18C1 and the B18B1, so they are not the optimal trannies for the B16A.

**** that. I would bitch and moan until they gave you the CORRECT Y21 JDM hydro SiR/SiRII tranny, or at least a 99-00 Si tranny S4C.

Did you ask for a B16A swap with GS-R tranny, or did you buy the "JDM second-gen B16A swap" that should have had the Y21?

Your choice, but either way you will be sorry in the long run.

I am not tryint to be a dick man - I just want to see you get the full potential out of that B16A swap. I will try to find a working link to a good B-series tranny chart...

Okay, a Y80 is either an RS/LS/GS or GS-R tranny. The tranny code ONLY tells you what chassis the tranny comes in, and NOT the trim of the car nor the gears inside the tranny.

S80 could either be an LS/RS/GS, GS-R, or even Type R tranny.

Y21 and S4C means Civic/Del Sol body, and we know they're pretty much all going to be good geared trannies because they all pretty much had the same gearing and 4.400 final drive (99-00 Si FD is debatable).

Tranny code again only says what car BODY it comes from.

Y80/S80 is from the 1994-2001 Integra.

In order to know exactly what you've got, you'd have to tear the tranny apart and count teeth.

Type R is easier to spot because of the LSD - look through the diff and if you see NOTHING then it has LSD.

Non-LSD will have a pin sticking through the diff, and you can'tt see all the way through the diff because of this.

So what's the best tranny for all-motor or near-stock?

In my opinion (I'm biased) it has to be the Type R tranny. Close gearing and LSD cannot be bad.

I have a 1998 USDM Type R tranny with an ATS 4.929 final drive and it is totally kick-***. The only way I can see upgrading it would be to drop in a better LSD - Quaife or ATS carbon would be my choice.

GS-R and Ls are NOT good choices IMO because of their taller gearing and especially the LS 4.26 FD. This will kill a B16A powerband because it takes too long to power through gears and the RPMs drop too much between shifts.

Closer gearing will keep the revs higher between shifts, while a higher FD number will let you power through the gears easier.

CONTRARY to what some say, a higher final drive will NOT make the revs drop les between shifts. ONLY closer gearing does that.

How would I know this?

I used to think the same about FD and rev drops, but after my ATS I found that the revs still dropped the same in shifting, but the time in each gear and the MPH in each gear changed a great deal.

There are mathematical equations that support this too, and I'll try to find that link

With a broader powerband of a B20/VTEC I think a GS-R tranny would be fine, but I'd seriously add an LSD though.

B20/VTEC still has a lot of low-end grunt and good midrange power, so the slightly taller GS-R gears probably won't hurt.

Ideally I still think a Type R tranny would be awesome though, and even a 4.78 or 4.929 final drive couldn't hurt either. I've seen ATS 4.929 FD-equipped B20/VTECs on this MB before - I'd ask around and see who has run that set-up and how they like/dislike it.

Thanks for the info. Looks like my plans of going N/A have changed! Damn ***** won't give me the right tranny, so i'll have to plan on going turbo!!! I'll only go crvtec when I see it is safe and others aren't blowing up everyday.

What is that?????

The sites should say JDM SiR-G - that's the JDM "GS-R" - they call it something else.
