Y7/Y8 swap in 00 civic ex
If a 00 civic ex comes stock with a Y8 why would mine have a y7 block with all y8 components? I am aware of the whole mini me thing but why down grade if the stock Y8 is a better block???

If it really is a Y7 block w/*all* Y8 components than it is an upgrade, but that's not what a mini-me is (Y7 block, Y7 internals, Y8 head).
But it probably happened because another swap was removed when the car was eventually sold.

The came stock with Y8. Simply throwing a y7 block in is not a upgrade.
Putting a d16y8 head on a d16y7 block IS a mini me.

An upgrade? How so?

Well the block is stamped with the Y7 marking and part numbers for intake manifold, ecu, the head all come back as Y8. Even has the vtec solonoid... just dont get why the 7 block which is non Vtec, right? Makes me wonder about the extra oil ports or whatever that is needed for the vtec head. Jus seems like there would be a reason the Y7 block is there when thebcar came with the Y8 originally.

For all intents and purposes it seems like the Y7 block/Y8 head is the mini me, but knowing the y8 is the stock block... sounds like a downgrade to me.

Do you get VTEC engagement? If so, the oil jet situation was remedied.
Compression test good?
If everything checks out, I wouldn't sweat it. Only the person that did this "swap" could tell you why it is the way it is.

Seems to get vtec engagement... sounds like it anyways.. as for a compression test I will have to look into that.

In either case, you basicly just have a Y8, that happens to have a Y7 block.
All you gain is vtec, and on single cam it's not that special to begin with. OP there really is noithing to worry about, assuming the engine was put togter correctly. The Y8 block is the same, for exception of the very slight compression increase.

Just to clear up a few things. There would be a slight compression bump to about 9.96 according to some Dseries calculators so it would be slightly higher than even the Y8 due to the Y7 pistons differences.
The Y7/Y8 doesn't have an oil jet like the D15B7's.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark that the reason you have the Y7 block is the original owner spun a bearing due to not changing or running out of oil and threw the Y7 block in there and sold the car. Either way as long as it runs good you should be good to go.

erson would downgrade from a y8 to a y7 block... (if it is a "downgrade") But thx for being a smartass! There certainly are not enough Haters in the world!!

Would the Vtec not work with out the oil ports??
I appreciate urinput!

The Vtec most definitely works... No cel's at all. Engine seems to be in good running condintion. So far.. So good. My question about the oil ports was bc I had read somewhere that the Y8 engine has these extra "oil ports" to cool and lubricate the pistons more than the Y7 block which does not have them. Again, according to what I found in my studies...
I guess my ultimate goal with this Civic right now is to find out what ALL type of work has been done and how extensive (more so things like any mods to pistons, bored? P&P? cam? gears? etc.). Its obviously more than the "stock D16Y7 with only added parts being a cold air intake" Civic I was told it was when I bought it.

You dont have a CEL?
Y7 blocks dont have the knock sensor port like the Y8 blocks do IIRC.
ps: In my old hatch, I had a Y8 block with a Y7 head

All 96-00 Civics (except B16A) share the same block, crankshaft and rods (except GX has different rod numbers). All 4 have different pistons (D16Y7, D16Y8, D16Y5, D16B5).

13310-P2E-010 Crank
13210-PM6-000 Rod
