Default y5 with y8 head, which ecu should i be running?

ok, as i continue to fix the mess from the previous owner left, i need to know what the hell he did with the motor.

its a 99 ex, 5 spd. It have a y5 block, with a y8 (p2j-6) head, and a p2p (99-00 ex) ecu.

i get a horrible bog from 3500-5500 (until vtec basically, until then it seems like it is choking, then it seems like all this fuel is dumped into the engine making my vtec really loud) from what i have read from the good ol' H-T archives, running a y5 with a ex ecu is known to cause this bog, but i would think with a y8 head my vtec would function like a normal y8? seems like the only thing different with my car from a normal ex is that i lack the y8 block, and possibly a y8 transmission.

anyways, i just want to get my **** to run right, i want this bog gone, it's horrible.

how can i get rid of the bog? i already thought of a few ways to go, just looking for more/better ideas, or the ideal route to go.

1. a p2n ecu (hx), which is seemingly impossible to find (i have looked)
2. a vafc, so i can knock my vtec down to around 3000, basically making it like an hx ecu.
3. i also have a p28, which i could chip, and get an hx basemap put on it as well. what a waste...

opionions/suggestions/ideas are appreciated.

With a y8 head, you'll run a y8 ecu if you'd like to stay OBD2, and a P28 if you'd like to convert.

yes if you go the cheap way.

i would tune a p28 with crome for your car.

thanks for the links Eran, i was hoping to find someone local though. $70 seems kinda steep for chipping my ecu. i got the ecu socketed in my 944 for $25 bucks, i was hoping to pay something comparable for my honda. maybe i will just have to shell out the cash though...

anyways, bump for more answers. thanks everyone so far.
