WTF! Rattle when revving and no starting! HELP!
Ok, my problem first started earlier this week when I went to my car to go to work and it would not start. It made a noise as if the starter motor was spinning, but nothing happened. I was easily able to roll the car back and start it by dumping the clutch.
I assumed this was the starter going bad, and it would easily be fixed by just replacing the starter. I found a starter for sale locally and I planned on going to get it today.
Before I had a chance to go and get it, I also noticed a slight rattle when I revved the car when the clutch was pushed in. Almost sounded like a chain rattle. Oh well, I just kind of ignored this.
I went to pick up the starter, and I put it on (after a few mishaps - none related to the starter) and to my wonder, nothing happened. Still the same spinning noise as if the motor is spinning on the starter and the click from it engaging. BUT MY CAR DOESN'S START!!!!
I've come to the conclusion that my flywheel is possibly fucked because of these 2 things happening to my car at the same time, I assume they are related, and they almost make sense. I just don't quite understand how the flywheel can get fucked up. PLEASE HELP!!!

Either you lost ALL your flywheel teeth (highly unlikely) or your starter's teeth aren't meshing with the flywheel. I'm kinda new to this, but those are my guesses.

Re: (Frozen Si)
in theroy if ystarter wasn't completely disangauging it could have messed up the teeth on your fly wheel but i really don't think it could have taken them all off

Well, when I pulled out the starter, I could see the flywheel and there were teeth on it.
The missing teeth doesn't explain the chain sounding rattle that comes from the motor when I rev it....

Make damn sure you are pulling enough amps from your battery...You`d be surprised how easily a batery can slip below 10 volts...

Um the chain sound when revving could be loose portions of the teeth down in the Bell housing. Or the flywheel could be loose. I would definitely take the starter out then examine all the teeth by while you have somone turn the motor over. Use a ratchet and a socket on the crank pulley and turn the motor and have a look at the flywheels teeth. Also I think I would take tranny out and check and see if there are any loose shavings down in the bell housing. And make sure the flywheel is properly tightened down.

I jumped the starter signal wire over to the starter power source and it still does the same thing. I am going to examine the teeth in just a few minutes when I get a free minute at work.
