Compression and leakdown test are basically the only things you need to do for an indication of whether your car is built for turbo or not.
Of course, if you have no money, don't look into turbo. I would say after the turbo install is complete, you should have at least $500-700 extra at your disposal.

Re: Would you go turbo with 160K? (Tetsuwan Atomu)
Well, as in complete I mean everything that accompanies the turbo(gauges, brakes, etc..). With the Drag kit, I ended up spending $3600+ for the kit plus some extra items (Tial WG, gauges, Missing Link, Turbo Timer,Carsound cat ). In addition, I have:
Rebuilt the crappy turbo: $340
Replaced the crappy oil lines(inlet and outlet) in the Drag kit: $190
Replaced FMU and inline pump w/ Walbro, DSM injectors, AEM FPR: $430
Added Clutchnet Stage II: $350
Cutstomized my exhaust for testpipe and 1 time/ year cat: $250
All this and my car still isn't running right.
So, you're looking at over $1500 for other parts, not including required maintenance.
I'm not saying you will need to take the exact path I have, but you will need money for unexpected problems. 1 thing I can recommend is that you DO NOT buy a Turbonetics hybrid turbo. If you do purchase one, just tell your seller to ship it straight to get rebuilt.

Save up for a motor instead. Much less headaches to deal with than a SOHC Turbo with 160k. You'll probably end up blowing that motor and you'll need to get a new one anyways.
