Search, there's tons of topics about this.
People have gotten it to work.
As for the speedo, obviously you'll need an analog to digital converter, they've developed a lot since the idea first "came about." I'm not sure if any projects went under way to sell it in mass production but people have done it.

As far as I know the conversion is still pretty damn expensive.
