i wanna take the middle layer out of my y8 gasket i just bought but isnt that layer there for a reason? will it leak or not seal right if i remove it or no?

why do you want to do this

Probably to lower the compression ratio. I doubt it will work though.

yea i know thats what he is going for i wanted him to say that and then laugh at the stupidity of it

lilscott 12-20-2005 01:25 PM

just buy a 1 or 2 layer headgasket in the first place

I would also like to know this. They are three layer gaskets, I've heard of people seperating them but wasn't sure.

Can you buy 1 or 2 layer? They always give me 3-layer when I buy a Y8 gasket.

Jay_Sensing 12-20-2005 01:37 PM

Yes, they make aftermarket ones. You can't buy an OEM 1 or 2 layer.

And you add to lower compression, he is wanting to remove to bump compression.

Don't do it lol, check out inline four, password, site like that. They are out there.

Re: (Jay_Sensing)

ive heard of ppl doing it so someone must have tried it. it seperates easily but as long as it would not leak , i just want to know from someone who has used it like this already

You should have bought a Z6 gasket if you're trying to raise compression.

A lot of turbo guys use Y8 headgaskets on their Z6 turbos to lower compression.

i thought a z6 and y8 gasket are the same part number

Re: would a modified y8 headgasket leak ? (97grnrs)

oh i dunno. on the compression calc site it has an option for stock z6/y8 gasket giving a compression of like 9.6 to one or something , but then it also says "2 layer y8 gasket" which gives like a 10.2 : 1 ratio. so i dunno. i jus wanna hear from someone who has used it seperated before and know if it works.
