Is It Worth Saving?
Hi guys, I got a simple question, I have a list of problems and want to know if my motor is worth saving and I should fix the problems, or just get a new motor. It has like 4 CEL'S and here they are:
PO302: Cylinder 2 - Misfire Detected
PO304: Cylinder 4 - Misfire Detected
PO300: Random = ???
P1399 (pd): Undefined Code = ???
And another for the cat (which is to be expected since it doesn't have one)
The car also burns a **** load of oil and smokes HARD, as well as the oil turns black on every oil change after like 500 km. I know the answer should be to swap out the motor but I do not know much about swaps that is why I am stuck. An engine swap would be how hard on a scale of 1-10? Thanks for the help.
BTW: Car is a 99 Civic with a D16Y7.

nah if its already using alot of oil its time to dump to y7 and get you a nice y8 or maybe a d15b VTEC
its not that hard to do your swap should't take too long

From what year. It has to work with my OBDII car. How much do you want for it?

IMO rebuilding a D16Y7 is a waste of time and money. Last fall I got a Y7 from NY Block Exchange with 77k mi for $650.
I thought the hardest part of the swap (aside from rusty bolts, damn northern cars) was removing the wiring harness from the engine. It doesn't have the 2 peice harness like the 92-95s do.
I've done a lot of work on Hondas and didn't think it was that bad. If you don't have that much expirience, I think this would be a good chance to learn.

I thought that too. I'm looking at something cheaper than that though. I do have experience working on cars, just not on swaps. I'm just worried I will screw something up or run in to situations where I don't know what to do.

do you have someone who can help you with the swap?
I'll take $400 for the motor you need to use your y7 dizzy and get a VTEC solenoid
It came out of a 96 civic that a guy decided to go b-series so I guess its was obd-2 i dont mess with newer civics so i dunno

My friend can help me with the swap. He's never done one like me but we do have mechanical knowledge. 400 is a little to much. I found a guy who will sell me his complete D16Y5 no problems for 300.

Don't be afraid, I did my B16A swap when I was about your age - and I didn't know what I was doing 'til I was all done!
If you just want to replace the Y7 with another one, take your time and don't break anything (sensors, bolts etc.), study the engine bay and see exactly what needs to be done. These Hondas are really not that tough!
And it looks like jimmy o. is gonna hook you up!

You can get a complete rebuild kit for less than $300. You'll have to take the motor out, so it will be kinda like a swap anyways. Do a compression and leakdown test and report back.

Re: Is It Worth Saving? (SOHC_civic_si)
Really not worth saving, the codes don't worry me, but if a D-series engine is burning oil/coolant or knocking its time for it to go. Honda engine swaps are not hard as long as you stay D or B series in a civic. Theres usually some minor wiring, other than that its pretty much unbolt everything required to remove old engine and trans, installation is more or less reverse of removal. What can make swaps more difficult are things like axle nuts that wont come off, tie rod end/ball joint nuts that wont come off because the ends just spin. Throttle position sensors that break because they hit the firewall when you're lowering the engine into place, axles that come apart at the CV joints, exhaust bolts that break, etc. I apologize for being so long winded, I just wanted to point out that the engine swap in and of itself isn't hard if everything is rust free and nothing goes wrong. Its a lot of little problems that can make an engine swap hard if you don't have the tools/knowledge to deal with them.

hit up jdm engine depot they got b16 for $1500 and if u stay with obd2 the swap is quite simple. you will need shift linkages and mounts. label all the wire connectors before disassembling and a monkey with a basic set of tools could do it. dont be scared its really quite easy.

Re: Is It Worth Saving? (redline870)
Ok this is going to sound very weird I know... But since I bought my car over a year ago ALL I put in was 91 octane. After coming to the conclusion that I'm wasting my money since it's still pretty much a stock civic with bolt-ons, and that gas is too high for it, I put in 87 thinking I'd be saving money and my car would run fine. Well what a shocker! This post runs comparison to my other thread seeing if my D16Y7 is worth saving after a misfiring engine.
Anyways, the car actually felt like it was lagging. I know it sounds so weird but when I would step on the gas it felt like I had a 500 pound brick in my car. The clutch felt soft (ya I KNOW how does the clutch have ANYTHING to do with the octane rating in your car?), and it had the misfire problem where the exhaust would rumble like ****. So I burned that tank pretty bone dry, and put in some 91 again along with fuel injector cleaner. And my car felt back to normal? The exhaust rumble is very minimal now, you can still hear it a little more than usual but not anything like before, the car doesn't lag anymore, and for some reason I cannot explain my clutch feel strong again?
Can someone please tell me these are all just a set of unrelated problems that just fixed themselves at the same time and have no relation? And the 91 octane? I'm like 99.9% sure a D16Y7 doesn't need to have 91. Is it having to do with my car being used to running it than suddenly going to a lower rating? Please help me understand this!
