your sychornizer in your tranny might be going, that could be a reason it isn't going into reverse. if it doesn't go away you syncronizers could be shot. but that isn't for sure, tranny problems are always hard to figure.

Re: (untitledsn41)
have you tried putting it in second, then putting it in reverse? me and my friends cars 'my 1999 civic si and my friends 1998 Gs-t' don't go into reverse sometimes unless we go from second to reverse, idk its a thought u could try it.

Re: (gobblebox59)
When it does that.. Put it in 1st gear, move forward a tiny bit.. Then put it in reverse. It should go in.
If that doesn't work, try to put it in reverse again.. (i'm guessing your shifter shifts halfway into reverse then stops).. while it's stuck, rev the gas to 1000RPM and it should move back in reverse.
If the 1st method doesn't work.. try the 2nd. Keep trying, but do NOT force it in gear hard.

Re: (untitledsn41)
got a short shifter? Have you modified the linkage in anyway? Mine does that a little bit and its only got 250 miles on it. But if its REALLY not engaging the gears it sounds like it might be a problem with the linkage or the shaft that connects the linkage to the selector prongs.

Tru dat! Yeah, put it into other gears first, then try reverse. Also, you can keep trying to pump more fluid (if you're hydro) by clutching a few times.
How's your clutch when you're switching thru gears and how's it gripping?

mines all stock and it still does that sometimes, I just rev up the engine a little and it goes right in, or if Im going down a slope I just let it roll back a little and for some reason it goes on in.. seems like a lot of people have this problem.

Re: wont go in reverse...AGAIN (untitledsn41)
Is your tranny auto or stick??? If it's stick, you may need a new clutch. If it's auto, I had the same problem...try putting lucas in it. I'm asking because you said you changed the tranny fluid. honda92egchick = confused. But since you said you had to force it in, then I'm assuming it's a stick. I have problems getting my sol into reverse, but I think I need a new clutch.

Yup yup yup. Have this problem too. Only once in a while though. To solve it I usually rev the engine or try to rock the car so it moves on the wheels just a little bit and then it slips right in.

Re: wont go in reverse...AGAIN (Snoopa Loop)
I think the owner's manual even states you should shift into 1st, then 2nd before shifting into reverse, because reverse isn't synchronous. At least my '89 wagon manual does.

Re: wont go in reverse...AGAIN (jazzman)
Well, if your clutch is still good, try replacing either the master or slave solenoid. Had to do this with my DC. Was fine afterwards. When my clutch went bad, I always had problems with 4 gear grinding and the clutch wouldn't grip as much going uphill. After replacing clutch, it was fine and strong.

Re: (untitledsn41)
You can try doing that. Remember that if you do bleed the clutch, you need to kick that bitch hard as ****. Like, at least try to get as far down as possible. At least on my DC and both my EH's I had to do that to make it smooth and stiff.

Re: (untitledsn41)
If the ONLY gear your having problems is reverse then you can only think of whats the only part that the reverse gear operates on. So I have to say either your idler, reverse spurr gear. Also keep in mind your car has to be at matching rev's inorder for 1st gear to work, Meaning iput shaft speed has to equal Output shaft speed or it wont go in or you will grind the gears.
The Next question is did this all the suddenly happen or was it gradual?

Re: (BatuKing)
it happend all of a sudden last week. i was trying to back out of a parking space at a mall in town and it wouldnt let me put it in gear...not even the slightest bit. but i changed the tranny fluid and it eased up a bit and then finally it just popped in with some force and then popped out with some force. after that 1 time it was easy as can be again. but as of yesterday night it started again. and ive tried EVERYTHING. trying to match revs watched the linkage as it moves... i think i am going to take it in to a tranny shop and have them look at it. but please keep your replys comin at me.
thanks for everyone
