Default Wont go into 1st gear, sticks in 2nd(after tranny swap)

Last night I swapped in a used tranny which I was told it was in "good condition"
I also changed my clutch and put on a fidanza flywheel.
After swap was complete, I notice I cant get it into 1st gear, it litteraly will not move into first. All other gears it had no problem.

We put the car back on the lift and throw it into second and let off the clutch and the wheels move. The tranny is now stuck in 2nd and wont shift out of gear.

I went back this morning to move the car out of my buddys garage and it slipped right out of second and into reverse with no problem. But still wont go into first.
Also, the clutch is alot looser after the swap and theres ALOT of play in it.

We bled the lines, it has a new slave cylinder and MC.
Replaced the tranny fluid.

Just looking for ideas of what it might be.
Im thinking its the shift forks for 1-2.

Hmmm, double and triple bleed that line because any air in it will treat you like a dirty slave.

Sounds like there is air in the clutch hydraulic system. Try bleeding it out again.

i had a problem something like that. i had a hard time getting it into first..but i had to pump the clutch ALOT and push kind of hard, like it was grinding in and it finally went in. and when its in second, i doesnt come out unless i pulled really hard. i htought it was my master/slave cylinder..then the forks. finally found out that first and reverse are trying to engage at the same time. thats what r&d at honda told me so i dunno. just a thought for ya.

Can you get the trans into all gears when the engine is off?

If you can then it is not the shift fork. But from the way you described the issue I would estimate that it is a mechanical failure. Check for nicks or kinks in the linkage. If exterior trans components are in good working order then the problem is integral to the trans.

The tranny wont go into first even with the car off. But it will go into the other gears just fine.
Also, im not sure on how long your supposed to bleed the clutch lines, it didnt take long, he said it quit bubbling so we were done.
My brother who was not there said to bleed the crap out of the line.

if the line has stopped bubbling its probably bled enough....i would bet on an internal problem...ie. 2 gears are trying to engauge at the same time...

If it does not work when the car is off then it is NOT a hydraulic failure. It is mechanical.

Do like I said, check the linkage and if that seems well then my next step would be to remove the the trans and open the case. If you don't know what you are looking for, or do not have the tools and experience to do this I suggest not trying.

The whole reason I swapped this tranny in was because my old one had a bad ISB, and I was too lazy to open of the bell housing and change it. Looks like i'll be doing this tomorrow. (I have a new ISB and seal)
I do have the tools necessary, but little experience. But you have to learn at some point.

If you need help don't be afraid to ask. I am sure there are a few others like me that do this for a living.

Thanks man, but i found a writeup on d-series.org
And I have my step dad, he helped me step by step with my engine swap and installing my clutch and flywheel last night.
Next on the list is learning to rebuild a d16z6
