Default Wiring a Momo steering wheel

For those of you who have an aftermarket steering wheel with dual auxillary buttons, how did you wire them up so that they do not become tangled when you steer. I have a Momo Pilota which has the standard center horn button and then the other two buttons on the left and right.

I don't want to ghetto rig the job but the only logical way seems to be the use of some type of gyro.

It's really simple.

Mine works like a champ.

Just trace all the OEM wiring and cut off the plug. Wire that single wire to the horn button. I wrapped the wire (loosley) around the hub so that when you turn the wheel, it won't tangle.

The hub covers up the wires so you can't see them.

If you can install a radio, you can make the horn work.

You know, I just called Momo yesterday about that same question. Had to talk to a few people before I found someone who had done an installation on a Civic. Turns out if you are removing a wheel with an airbag you simply lose the capability to have a horn button!!! This is because those wheels with airbags route all electrical functions through a gyro-type device (like the brake system on a BMX bike). You CAN make it work actually, but you would have to drill a few holes and run a few wires and custom the job. This I find really ridiculous. When did airbags become standard.....was it 93..94? So anything that isn't almost 10 years old you are going to lose the capability to use your horn! I think that's fucked up....the horn IS kinda important.

So this weekend I am going to proceed to figure out some way to make the horn button work and do something so that the two auxillary buttons can also be functional. I wish Momo, Sparco, etc would just mention on their web site or something to actually use the features of their wheels is going to be "A PAIN IS THE *** FOR THE INSTALLER!!" That would be an accurate description of what your getting yourself into.

If you want to make it work, you have to leave the airbag reel on the car. (I re-routed mine under the dash) and still have cruise control. I have a teg btw but should be similar in a civic. Anyway you will need to extend the wire to the horn. I bought a plunger type connector for the horn. So when you turn the steering wheel, the wire inside the plunger turns as well and wont get caught by the hub.

why dont you go to pep boys and buy a button, then rout wires for it beside the steering wheel so you dont have to worry about gettin tangled up?
that is what I did, I just mounted the button on the bottom of the steering collum and it works fine
Good luck

This is what I did to make the horn work. Athough I had a OMP steering wheel, I got the sparco button kit and fit it on, To wire them in, I sorta got the idea from watching the WRC guys, and wired in a slinky wire. I cut a small hole on the bottom side of the steering column plastic and connected the wire the the horn wire from the cable reel which was chopped off. So now when I steer, the slinky wire stretched and wraps around the outside of my hub.

well how do they do it on a BMX bike with the brake cables? if you really wanted, you could use a system like that

Dude, how can you get an inspection sticker without a horn? In NY, no horn, no sticker.

Anyone know if the reel holds the wiring for the cruise control as well? I was pretty sure I'd be able to keep it when I made the switch, but now I'm not so sure.

Simple....
I Have a MOMO Apache w/2 sparco buttons(NOS) and the Horn and they all work. Just look at any F-1, Rally, Nascar and you will see the solution.
At radio shack they sell A/C cable(2-wire, slinky like a non-portable phone), cut off the end's and strip 1/4" off each of the four ends.
Buy some male-female terminals and crimp them on tight.
On the back of the steering wheel is the button's connections, red=power, black=ground.
Ground goes to the grounding plate provided which has a male connector(note you must grind off the "hump" so it sits flat between the steering wheel and the hub).
Power is (please check with an continuity checker) the brown or blue wire coming from behind the steering wheel. To confirm this check the continuity from the fuse box(horn) and the wire you are gonna attach to our radio shack AC cable.
Now just run the AC cable to the steering wheel and connect, the button just grounds out the 12volts(DC) to ground everytime you press the button(makes horn beep).
Use tie wraps for pressure release points I did a few in convenient spots, and also I ran the wires to the horn switch at the steering wheel by cutting a hole at the bottom to the hub cover(nice place to put a tie wrap).
Now you can turn and it won't get tangled and your horn works, also you can use the remaining wire(the AC cord has 2) for future NOS wiring to the Sparco Buttons.
See it's not so bad, and now your car look's even faster and more seriously technical.
