Manual trans yes, automatic trans no. Also '99 - '00 Si/'94 - '97 Del Sol VTEC trans wont work, but any other '92 - '00 5 speed Civic trans will.

Just a question for a similar, yet different issue..

i paid for a 2000 manual gearbox out of a VTEC engine, and i own a 1997 nonVTEC civic. Guys at the wreckers are telling me they wont fit my nonvtec engine because theyve got a VTEC manual transmission..
Are they ripping me off? they said theyre looking for a nonvtec gearbox to give to me, and ive been waiting for 5 days now. should i just press them to hand me the 2000 civic gearbox?

Thanks

I need to be sure of the "fit" relating to the answer here r.e. vtec manual transmissions fitting non-vtec. I have a 2000 civic hatch sohc non-vtec hatchback d167y engine. I see many more vtec (model) transmissions available. Are they the same? I need to know asap. Thanks in advance to anyone who knows.

As long as it’s from a single cam SOHC VTEC engine such as a D16Z6 or D16Y7 then it should bolt up to your D16Y7. But the DOHC VTEC transmission such as the one used on the B16 won’t bolt onto a D16 engine.

Right the 99-00 SI is a dual cam so the transmission is different. The 94-97 dual cam VTEC B16 transmission won’t work either, but the D16 single cam VTEC from 94-97 in the Del Sol works on a D16.

It depends if the 2000 VTEC transmission you got was from a Civic EX D16Y8 in which it should bolt onto your 1997 non VTEC, it the 2000 Civic SI dual cam B16A transmission won’t bolt onto your 1997 Civic. I doubt you got a Dual cam B16 transmission from the wrecker because they are rare and hard to find and are like $700.
So take the 2000 VTEC transmission because if it’s from a D16Y8 Civic EX it will bolt onto your 97, but if it’s from a 2000 SI then it won’t bolt onto your 97 but you’ll have found something really valuable and could resell it for more $.

The transmissions are different gearing, the SOHC VTEC has shorter gears and the one from the SOHC non- VTEC has longer gears, but the part where they bolt onto the engine is the same, as well as the engine mounts, and axle placement and hole for axles is the same. So they are interchangeable, just not the DOHC ones from the 99-00 Civic SI B16.
You’ll want S20 or S80 transmissions.
