Will not move in 5th or reverse
Today I was backing up my driveway and all of the sudden the my civic locked and the engine died. I could not get it out of rev gear. After forcing it, it popped out of gear, but not I move will not move in 5th or reverse. Gears 1-4 are all good, just nothing in 5th and reverse. The tranny is a rebuilt tranny about 2yrs old...for what it is worth.
If I remember correctly, isn't 5th and reverse the same gear? With that said, did i toast my tranny?? I did have the smell of a burning clutch, but something tells me my gears in the tranny are done. Before i start taking it apart tonight, just want to ask your opinions. It is my daily driver...so this is going to be an issue for me!!
Thx
98 civic EX...with HX tranny installed....
240K miles...

Re: Will not move in 5th or reverse
I didn't get it in the garage tonight but i will say 'yes"...I checked it during my last oil change, about a month ago. I park in the garage each night, and nothing leaking..also nothing under it when it happened.
Also 1st - 4th work OK...tried to put it in 5th and just will not go....the shifter moves to rev but doesn't feel like it is going into any gear. In rev, if I let off the clutch, it nothing....

1/2 share a fork. 3/4 share a fork. 5/R share a fork. The shift change holder assembly, however, does share 5/R on one of the pins. It sounds like your SCHA is damaged/failed. On the plus side, it's probably one of the easier parts inside the transmission to replace. On the down side, you still need to rip into the transmission to replace it. Speed Factory offers a B series SCHA upgrade (which won't work in your transmission), but you might try giving them a call and seeing if they can fix your D series SCHA. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the replacement part direct from Honda has been discontinued.

Re: Will not move in 5th or reverse
Thx for the replys..
I will check the fluid today, but wanted to ensure my understanding is correct...
If I need to look for a new tranny....any of the trim package will fix the EX...meaning any 5-speed tranny from a DX/LX/EX will all work. I realize that the gearing might be different, but as far as bolting right up...any 92-99 civic 5-speed tranny will work??
Am I understanding correctly??
I kind of need this car running....so if I am going to pull the tranny, I am just going to look for something I can swap back in.

Thx...
Pulled the tranny today, yes, full of fluid and it looked really good. After I had it on the bench, i could hear something rattling around inside. Attempted to split the housing and for the life of me i can't get it apart. It move up about 2-3 inches and then that is it. I hit you tube, the the FSM...messed with the retaining clip at the back end, but still can't get it to separate.
What else am I doing wrong. i pulled the little spring loaded steel *****?? I am wondering if it has something to do with what failed. ..
Anything I am missing?

I played with that clip for about 2hrs and finally gave up. When you say, unclip it, you mean just spread it open as wide as it go...I could not get it to actually unclip and remove it.
I feel llike an idiot...I have a lead on a used tranny, but want to see inside and see what failed.
