will i see any gains doing this?
ummm as u can seee in the pic
my filter sits right above my tb, if i take off all the intake bs im left wiht just the filter in the open air and the tb directly below it
will i see any gains if i put a drop in k&n filter, take off all the piping and the tp portion of the filter box, and leave it like that? maybe secure the filter by strapping a wire across it

w00h00!!! go D16Y7!! (i got the same engine)
you might as well just get a cold air or short ram intake off ebay, MAKE SURE ITS FOR THE DX!!!
some of the more advanced things you could do is swap the intake manifold out for the EX one(requires a different intake) You could also put a header on, but that will require a new cat. also. I plan on swaping that engine out for the B16A2 since it virtually plug and play.

Re: (BeerBaron105)
Just pop all of the piping off and even run without the top cover on the filter. It wont really make it any faster but it sounds mean. If you plan to swap, don't waste money on that motor then.
EDIT: I had the resonator box and the piping off to begin with and ran without the top of the box for a couple of weeks until I got my y8 intake mani and such. If you run without the top of the box though, get some long rubber bands to hold the filter in.

Try it. At least it'll sound cool. Just don't completely remove everything else so you can hook it back up if you feel like it. I'm sure you'll get 1 or 2 hp with the K&N filter in there.

Actually I think the resonator box is like 4 bolts, and the piping just pulls off. Takes less than 20 minutes to get it all out and you can put it right back in.

I used to beat the **** out of it with the top of the box out because I thought it sounded so good. Just go easy until like 4k, then jump on it to pretend for the VTECH y0!

Re: (Ricey McRicerton)
I would buy an exhaust (weld on muff.) or something and cheap intake or something. Dont just take the stock setup off it probably is not a good idea.

Explain to me why not?? All that the stock stuff does is make it less noisy. I ran like that for a good long while.

This is free and he's swapping the motor. No sense in spending money on a motor you're going to toss in less than a year. My .02.

your motors not hopeless. A friend of mine back in the day(99 -00) had a 98CX and his best time at the strip was 15.1 stock head and block allmotor so there is potential. Just depends on your budget.

I've run a 13.8 on a stock bottom end with my turbo setup so I won't argue with you one little bit. Im just saying though, if he has already decided to swap, he's going to swap. No sense in wasting money on a motor he does not want.

ok well i did it, im just using the stock filter and its secured with a couple wire straps but god damn the car is loud now, even wiht a stock exhaust at WOT its so loud, i doubt i gained anything, but i didint notice any low end tq loss despite the hot air getting sucked in, oh well feels alot more fun to drive now!
