will I pass smog without an axle back (muffler)?
I have a del sol and I have been driving without an axle back (muffler) for a year now. Unbolted it and sold it, didnt mind driving without one. Cat is still there, etc... I just unbolted the axle back so its tucked behind the lower control arms and wheel. Do I need to have a muffler to pass smog? I am located I in the central valley california.

Technically speaking it won't have any impact on the emissions portion of the test. The question is will a smog tech test you without a muffler.

This is almost as bad as asking if you would pass a drug test if you smoked last week. If you have to ask, you're probably going to fail.

If the only problem with the vehicle is the muffler is missing yes you will pass in California. If the vehicle passes the functional test and visual test you have nothing to worry about. The reason being is exhaust modification is exempt from CARB if it is cat-back because the modification is after the last emission device (catalytic converter) and will not affect emissions. A smog tech could care less how loud it is as long as there is a pipe for them to insert the smog probe into. It's a smog test not a decibel test.

A) Per CARB (California Air Resources Board), no.
From the intake to the very tip of the exhaust, everything in between is considered (by CARB) to be part of the smog equipment required today.
B) Per an inattentive smog shop operator, likely.
Most small operators will advise you what needs to be done to be compliant - before they hook the vehicle up to the - state - computer. A 1995 vehicle has many more requirements than a 1976 vehicle.
C) Per most any law enforcement agency within California, you might as well be smoking crack.
Most any ticket today, at a minimum, will cost the offender in the neighborhood of $500, for any motor vehicle violation in California. As well, a ticket for an unmuffled or modified vehicle will require further scrutiny by a law enforcement agency once the violations have been corrected.
