which will give me more hp
I got a 2000 stock dx. would a mini me headswap give me more hp using my stock tranny or
a tranny swap using a jdm sohc lsd tranny from a vti with my stock dx motor?
both swaps I can get for about the same price. deciding on which one to get?

A tranny swap won't get you more horsepower, it will just help your gearing and getting you through the gears quicker.

True.
I'd go for the tranny swap if it has the optional LSD for sure.
IMO the VTEC head swap is highly over rated.
I'd get the tranny and swap in a sick non-VTEC cam and get some headwork done.
Unless of course you plan on going DOHC within the next year or so...

Id definately grab that tranny...I'm pretty sure a Y8 head is easier to come by than that tranny. Do the head later though...definately.

Tranny...as one who has a mini-me with a long DX tranny I regret not getting the shorter EX tranny...oh well...i'm rectifying my mistake on friday

The tranny will not get you any additional hp, but it has something that you might want to consider down the road:lsd. If you plan to stick with D series engines, this would be the better upgrade for the long term. The lsd will help you control your car much better when you keep upgrading towards more hp. imo a lsd tranny on a d16y8 swap with a turbo kit should be hella lotta fun and faster than a comparable stock b18c1 swap. you really have to determine your long term plans for your car in order to make the best decision. D16y8 heads and swaps are plentiful and can be found nearly instantaneously these days. The lsd tranny is rare, and imo -if you're staying with a d engine- well worth it. hope this helps.

Let me also add one more thing:
If you plan on staying SOHC and even N/A then you might want to seriously think about the fact that the aftermarket 4.78 and 4.929 final drives from SRR do NOT bolt into the LSD tranny. The ring gears are not compatable.
IMO I'd never do a nice N/A build for a SOHC without a final drive swap, and this means personally I'd have to opt for a 2000 EX tranny and add the SRR 4.929 final drive and a Quiafe LSD.
Then again with all that money spent on just a tranny for a SOHC build you'd be getting over DOHC money.
IMO I'd get the VTi tranny and add boost to that D16Y7. I hate to be an ***, but it takes a lot of money to get a SOHC N/A to run with stock swaps.
Boost makes it pretty easy

Re: which will give me more hp (B18C5-EH2)
The problem with final drives is that they alter your cruising RPM. Not to say they arent great, but they are fairly expensive for a D Series enthusiast. Most people who mod D-series don't have money flowing from their asscheeks for car parts. If you are a hardcore road racer...the 4.9 FD is a great mod and worth all of the money. But if its just a normal everyday driver who occasionally goes to the drag strip (like me) a good substitute for a 4.9 FD would be the EX transmission with 20" tires or slicks (175/50/13 are 20"). Take a look at these MPH shift points for my motor (DX Tranny 4.058 FD, 7200 RPM redline):
Stock:
37 - 68 - 102 - 132
EX Trans Only:
35 - 60 - 91 - 126
20" Tires Only:
32 - 60 - 90 - 115
4.7 FD Only:
32 -59 -88 - 114
4.9 FD Only:
31 - 56 - 85 - 109
EX Tranny w/ 20" Tires:
31 - 53 - 80 - 110
As you can see from the chart, an EX tranny with 20" tires has closer ratio's than a 4.9 final drive...something to think about...

Re: which will give me more hp (BauleyCivic)
How do these numbers compare to the shift points for the Vti tranny? What about Vti tranny with the 20"ers?
Good stuff...

Well I have ran an ATS 4.929 final drive in my Type R tranny (way shorter gearing thatn any D tranny) on the street and loved it. No complaints in the cruising rpm range IMO, but then again I'm not like everyone else I suppose.
I also ran that set-up with 20'' M/T slicks and found the combo shitty for 1/4 mile use because of the 9400rpm in 4th gear coming across the timers at the end of my runs.
This would not be a problem at all with a D tranny because of the much taller gearing.
Also I must say that the final drive's biggest gains are on the street with the type of tires we usually run on the streets.
I run 205-50-15 Azenis and with the 4.929 FD in the car it felt much better.
Again I'm just stating that with all-motor a final drive on a D tranny is almost a necessity IMO.
I'd still say go with the VTi tranny and boost.
