will converting ac from r-12 to r-134a make my ac colder
will convert ac from r-12 to r-134a make my ac colder
i think i need a boost of r-12 anyway, but i cant find any
ive seen the kits at autozone and walmart
one brand is freeze something sounds like it would be colder
what should i do

NO!
A converted A/C system snt as cold as the original r-12. If its not leaking, then use r-12. Some shops still have it but its like 100bucks or more per pound.

yeah, don't do it, I converted because a line got a hole in it, it's only decent if it's below 85 degrees.

Yeah r-134a will not be as cold as r-12. I had a 90 miata which was converted. It worked decent. The cab is small in a miata but the convertable top is blk and thin. My miata's a/c worked better than my 95 honda civic dx hatch does right now.

we're not talking about the a/c system not being good. we are talking about when you convert to r134a from r-12 that it doesn't cool off the car as well as it did when it was r-12.

r-12 requires less compression to cool the same amount of air compaired to r-134. your 97 accord is newer and has a stronger compressor so it works better.

Nope, definately not as cold. Although I've heard that dura-cool is a r-12, r-134a replacement that is colder and cheaper. No firsthand experience.

i am running an r134a conversion in my accord and it is as cold as any r12 system i have seen. when i converted though i repalced teh condenser with a parallel flow condenser that is a lot more efficient.
and instead of using r12 consider using freeze12 which is cheper and compatible with r12.

r134a can blow just as cold if not colder than r12. if you do the complete conversion correctly its great. if you use the cheap kit its half ***. you need to replace all your orifice tubes or expansion valves, flush your system, use a new drier. If you do it right its great **** man

the new stuff (134) is colder than the r12...there are alot of derivatives of the r12, but if you can get a hold of the real deal r12, that stuff is colder, but harder to find...the 134 is per pound up to 3 times more expensive than r12...

But 2 years of difference shouldn't be much. If this is true about the compressor being better, can you swap a 97 Accord compressor to a 95 Civic? South Texas is too damn hot and I need a better A/C.

You cannot compare a pre94 auto a/c system to one after 1994. Both are completely different. The original question was a conversion of a r12 system to 134 refrigerant not whether one is colder than the other.

when i did my retrofit, i pulled the entire system apart, flushed each piece did new o-rings with sealant, custom lines to the new compressor, a new drier for the r134 coolant, and flushed out the evaporator coil and put a new expansion valve in. added oil and then let the shop taht made the custom lines fill it....i suspect i could do with a little bit more.

on a side note i first car, an 89 probe, was converted from r12 to the r134 whatever and it sucked afterwards.
Go for the r12 if you can, but it costs a lot of money
