Will the B-Series die?
Sorry if this has been discussed before, but it was an interesting topic I found in a magazine. This topic was written about in Honda Tuning magazine, and basically it says that because more and more show cars are putting B16/B18/B20 motors in, it will become harder and harder for those looking for actual performance to find and obtain a B-series motor. Eventually un-used B-Series engines may become extinct, partially due to so many being put into show cars that dont really use them for their full potential. Since this is probably the most anti-rice Honda board, I wanna know people's opinions on this..........do you think that show judging should be changed to not be partially based on what motor is in the show car, or what other ideas do people have. Is the K-Series the next B-Series in terms of popularity? Give your thoughts...............
BTW mods, excuse me if this is the wrong forum, because I am a trial member, I cannot post in general discussion, and I figured since the majority of Civic Si's (birth-cars of B16's) are EF/EG chassis, this was the best forum for it.

Actually, I believe that Honda doesn't stop manufactering the motors they come from until 10 years after. So, in theory 2011 area.
K series motors own. It's like a fantasy motor making power. 15-20 HP off a damn intake is godly
And EG's will be like old muscle cars when kids are 40 years old trying to find a 'classic eg honda'
oh boy that sounds wierd.

i hope the b series dies and k series takes over so i can get a b18c5 for cheap. which will likely happen

Ya, i would think if they stop putting them in new cars; like the last ones over here in 99/00 si they will fade off but it would be cool to open up a magizine and find parts (blocks, heads exc.) just like the small block chevys they dont even make a 5.7 L but it is a market in itself to keep selling.
BTW i was flipping through a JC Whitney "sport compact" they have a modified b 18 block with 81.5mm and 84.5mm bore and oversized water jackets but they bitch is over 2G's

i think it will be just like the 302's or 5.0liter mustang block. they switrched to the 4.6 but so many people still use the old 5.0. i think as long as there is a market for the B series it will be manufactured. if not by honda then by other companies. (I.E.- Dart, and whoever else wants to)

Yeah, I think eventually that 3rd parties are going to have to start making the B series engines and trannies...there are already a couple companies making B series blocks out there if I am correct...
Not only is the B series in danger of dying out, but the H series motors are going to be in the same situation sooner than later since the Prelude engines aren't being made by Honda anymore.

b series arnt going to be cheaper, if you read the article it was all about the b series dieing out and how the prices have jumped...like one of the guys said "I used to be able to get a b16 for like 1000 bucks now ya gotta pay 2100+, and have fun finding a tranny by itself"

When k-series become more popular than b-series . Will you want the b-series anymore ? I've been reading so many articles about the K-series that I may start saving for one to put in my hb and ditch the b18c1 I have now.

b-series will die when they run out of motors...then crazy high compression D series or turbo d series will take over...as they are already starting to

thats what i meant, the 302 or 5.0 liter. they are the same just like the 1.8 gsr is 1778cc's or whatever. i dont know the exact cubic centimeters im sure someone does. liters equals cubic inches divided by 60.

the K-series sucks big ding dong. it's a better motor and all but doing swaps and all the other stuff will be a pain in the ***. like the ecu for instance. you need a key that came with the ecu to be able to use it. that means no more swapping ecus...etc, etc. my buddy with a 2003 si got a RSX-R motor from japan and it came with the ecu as well...hooked it all up and damn thing wouldn't start. turns out he needs the key encrypted with the serial number/code that came with the whole setup in order to utilize the ecu.

Several new companies, not just Dart are going to start making B-series blocks. Look for news around SEMA.

Re: Will the B-Series die? (shermanyang)
Obviously since b series vehicles aren't in production anymore it's going to die out. PRices will only go up in my opinion because of supply and demand. Supply keeps going down and demand keeps going up as the import scene is growing. Seems like everyone wants a swap. The K series can't take over for a while because they just came out in 2002 so the b series will still have it's reign for a while until more k series engines arer available as well as vehicles to put them in. I'm not sure but i think that a kit to bolt a k series into a 7th gen civic is available. So a k series into a civic seems like it will be the future of swaps to me.

The B series will not just go away, when Honda stops producing them then aftermarket companies will take up the slack. Hell GM STILL offers SBC crate motors.

Re: Will the B-Series die? (RZFD)
there are tons and tons of motors sitting in japan just waiting to be shipped over, yes prices are going up, but is that because supply is going down, or demand is going up?? I think its because demand is going up, there are millions of motors sitting in japan, supply is not the problem. Until the K series becomes an economical swap with a kit for easy install, B-series swaps will be the king. I think B-series swaps will be very popular for atleast the next 2-3 years... Then K-series will take over.

Re: Will the B-Series die? (99GSRwBOOST)
sooner or later they will be almost impossible to get. meaning used jdm such unless you can afford to buy one from the dealer complete. that would be expensive. i know dart and someone else now make a complete b series motor. i thinks you will see more companies start to produce full crate motors that don't actually contain any honda parts. overtime i would think this option will become more affordable.

show cars with swaps arent the problem. thats like saying race cars are snatching and breaking all the good motors and trannys. Honda will continue to evolve and have new cars, motors, etc.. but at the same time racers will adapt and find ways to make their cars faster.
and as long as people have and race 4th, 5th, and 6th gen Civics, im sure there will be some kind of motor for it. its only a matter of time before the K series swaps is familiar with everyone and it becomes cheaper and easier to swap into whatever Honda you have.
