A D16 transmission will bolt up to your D15.

So you can use an EK for in an EG...but does that work in reverse? I'm assuming you'd have to have the same gear ratio correct, or it'd throw a CEL?

Yea. You'll run into problems on a obd2 system. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the problem should only be the ecu. Mechanically, everything should be solid.

It wont work. It'll bolt up, but it wont shift. '92 - '95 trans only has 2 lockup solenoids and a mechanical kickdown cable. '96 - '00 has additional shift solenoids, a main and countershaft speed sensor, and linear solenoid and no kickdown cable.

Nice follow up, I have an auto as well that works fine but I'm planning ahead for an instance where it does go out and I have to replace it. Again, thanks for following up on the issue.
