Default Will 98 Civic DX with 88-91 ZC swap pass smog?

hey guys whats up im still a n00b so bare with me..i just picked up a 98 coupe dx that from a friend and what i read is suppose to have a d16y7 but i was looking at the engine and noticed it didnt say d16y7 but said zc then the numbers 6506312 and its suppose to be from a 88-91 crx? its a sohc..it was smogged like this legally supposly in feb with this in their all my buddy said he had to do was switch the manifold and stuff i guess.

Well my question is will it fail when i take it to get smogged since i have to get it done? or if i have the correct stuff on it itll pass and the only reason it would fail is just because of the zc 6506312 stamp? thanks guys

no, the engine has to be same year or newer as the car

yep. that's about all there is to it. you'll fail the inspection. get a newer motor if you want everything to be legit. or smog it with the stock motor and put the zc back in. good luck.

A. Just the fact that is a ZC is a fail, basic block code has to be available in the US, nothing here was stamped ZC

B. The engine is older than the car, even if you had all the correct OBD2 emissions equipment hooked up and working it wouldn't pass (the date stamp is engraved in the head btw, and they'll check it)

thanks for answering my question the only thing it would fail is visually..also where is the date stamp located on the head or even a head serial number? thanks again

How to determine the year of the head is shown below, btw '88 - '91 ZCs don't look like the engine you have pictured.

the picture you posted is a d16y8 which has vtec and it would pass in your car but like everyone else said it needs to be of the same year or newer. To run that engine all you would need is to run 2 wires for vtec and a p2p computer that meets the same criteria as the motor.

how can you tell its a y8? I thought it was a d16y7 because of non-vtec.

It is vtec, you clearly see the vtec solenoid.

Better manifold, horizontal tb, vtec solenoid.

Sho nuff your probally right. My buddy said they told him it was from a 96 and all he needed to do to make it pass was swap over his original manifold and intake.

It's your service connector.

When you have a check engine light, you jump both terminals together and the car tells you the code. It's supposed to hang there.

EDIT: It's supposed to have a Brown and Black wire into it though. Not Brown and Green...

^^ this and clearly the intake manifold is different because it's horizontal and not vertical like a y7. It could've been a y5 but it was missing the egr valve but other than that they look exactly like the y8 from the outside.

Well to offer some different information... We know what it is, we are Hondaheads. But the normal smogtech is not. More than likely the tech didn't have a clue.

The ZC is a JDM motor from Japan and is not a legal replacement here in CA. It has to be USDM mean't for sale here in the US.

JDM = Japanese Domestic Market
USDM = United States Domestic Market

So you might be able to smog it anywhere?????
