I'd only do it if: A) I had tons of time to waste, B) had an ek frontend taking up my garage space, and C) had an eg with its frontend missing or smashed to hell.
There was a thread not a week ago that had a bunch of pictures of some eg/ek hatch amalagations, so I'd suggest doing a lengthy search with the words 'conversion front end' and such.

i've seen it done, i didnt like it at all, the bodystyles just dont have the same lines and it would never look right in my opinion. It also took quite a bit of work, supports and all the panels and such

I would think it would turn out ugly. I love the EK chassi more then the EG, there both good, but the EK is just more "beefy" looking in my opinion, has better OEM taillights (red/clear), has OEM 1 peice headlights, has a better interior. I just like it better.
I also noticed how you said "96-99 front end" there are small differences in that as well. 96-98 bump did not have slots for OEM foglights, 99-00 did. Now, I'm not sure if the fenders/hood are different on those, I'm assuming not.
So, if you did do this conversion, you would want to decide on a 96-98 or a 99-00 bumper. I personally like the 99-00 style.

99/00 front end is sharper.. the entire front end is different from the 96/98. you DO need a 99-00 radiator support for this conversion.. and true the lining doesnt line up but hey if its clean then you wont even notice.

had it done on my Ej. till some drunk fool took out my frontend. I thought it looked nice. and they are right. the 96-98 and the 99-00 front ends differ slightly. you would need all parts from either one. and cant mix. the lights are shapped slightly different. so the bumper hood and core support also differ. not as sure about the fender. and if you want the body lines to meet up you have to cut the fenders in half and splice with your factory ones. the rear of your EG with the front half of the EK.
hope this helps.
