check the IAC valve, (idle air control) or the TPS (throttle position sensor) if the TPS is out of adjustment it will idle like crap.

try changing ur throttle body gasket and ur intake manifold gasket, this worked for my frends 16a motor. he bought new sensors and new throttle body and tried all kinda expensive **** and nothing stopped the idling problem. and all then changed the gaskets for like $4 a piece and it idled perfect. so try that.

I heard of you have a leak on the intake manifold, you can use a spray bottle and spray the gaskets. It will cause it to idle normal then go back to normal.Just someting i heard but never tried.

Also check to make sure he does have a vac leak. This happend to me last year and it ended up being a bad PCV valve.
