Well that depends on how low you go and what spring rates you are running. I've seen CRXs and Civics run 13x8.5" wheels but that's extreme.
I run 16x7.5" with 43mm offset and it rubs on the rear upper control arm (the wheel does) and running 215/40x6" Kumho 712s with a 2" drop and 350f/400r spring rates.

My friend runs 17x8" Fittipaldi's on his '94 Si and the rear rubs on corners w/ his fat girlfriend in the passenger seat. You should be able to run 16x8's with the correct offset as said above.

running anything wider than a 7" wheel on a car as lightweight as a Civic is pointless. Why add the weight and friction unless you're strictly a drag racer? At some point, a larger contact patch begins to give diminishing returns because you're dispersing the weight of the vehicle over a wider area and therefore, there is less lateral grip.

werd...
I have 16*7 wheels. With 205/40-16 Kumho's..dropped anywhere from 1 to 6 inches depending on whether im drag racing, autocrossing, going to school, at a show, or bored and seeing if i can make my car not driveable.

I had 15x8 rims on my old car and when I tried them on my hatch they were just to wide, and they had 55 tires on them, just to much rubber and to wide.

17x7 with 40/205/17's. rubs on u turns, but no problems other than that. i think they are 205's, not exactly sure on that one.

If you are going with only a 15" wheel, go with 8. If a 16" wheel, go with a 7.5.
How low do you want the car? It all depends. For the power you are going to be making, I say go with a 8 width. 8 isn't a big deal, it just won't allow you to lower the **** out of the car.
