Default why does this keep happening? (side moldings)

Painted my side moldings myself about a year ago. found the method on here. I used an adhesion promoter and then primered. even sanded in between each layer and everything turned out well i thought.

But slowly my door moldings, not the other 2 started to get dirty. the dirt almost gets stuck in the paint and wont wash off. but just in the top layer. If i sand lightly there is nice white paint underneath. As time went on they turned almost black. So i pulled off just the door moldings, had to sand off the paint to clean them, and painted them again.

This time I used about three coats of clear. Then waited a couple days and Polished them and waxed them before putting them on.

well 3-4 months later this is what i have again and it gets worse every week.

This happens on BOTH sides, just the DOORS. fenders and quarter panels still look great after after a year. all were painted with the same paint, and same method.

I Painted the panels under the doors and my spoiler, and they still look good too. So it has to be somthing to do with the DOORS, but what?

I'm gonna take them off and try again today, but i hate to have to do this every 2 months.

try to sand with a rougher grit, and clearcoat the **** out of them when you are done.

Invest in some brake dust-reducing pads. That will probably help a great deal.

Yea, my sideskirts do that but I didn't put any clear coat on them, I think once you put the clear coat on if it's not perfectly smooth, dirt will get caught in the little dimples and such. good luck

this has happened to my side skirt on my ej8..i painted mine silver with 1 full can of clear coat each...its not shiney anymore, and the paint looks a little dull now..what i would suggest is re-doing the whole molding, without waxing it at all for awhile...i dont know...its just IMO..good luck bro

i just slapped some vinyl from the local graphic shop on, whenever it starts to fade, i just peel it off and put another sheet on, takes 10 minutes tops, and never had to paint the moldings and looks pretty damn good for the price..

Sand the paint COMPLETELY off, so its back to a black molding... Then, get yourself a product called PREP SOL... This opens up all of the pores in the paint... Once it dries, primer it... Then sand it, and prep sol again... Primer again, sand again, prep sol again... Then paint & clear, and you wont have the problem...

The problem you are having appears to be either A. the paint is soaking into the plastic, or B. The paint doesn't have a good adhesion to the plastic, and things are getting underneath the paint and fading it from the underside.... Yeah, you used clearcoat on the top, but what did you do to protect it on the bottom?

you shouldnt wax until after 2 months. Use adhesion promoter before you spray your paints on plastics.

oh, not sure if anyone covered this but......i got another theory. plastics always evaporate oil because thats waht its made from. Your paint isnt sealing them properly. I bet you didnt use a primer did you? Well, if you did primer it, go to your local autobody supply store and pick up some plastic prep that includes a plastic sealer .

This will protect your new paint. Goodluck. Don't forget to answer my questions

just got my car back after a shop repaint d the rear bumper cover..they put down a base coat then a couple layers of clear..then bake d it..then they polish d it smooth as silk..i ask d when i could wax it..they said to wait a few weeks so the paint could breath and seal..the waxing would seal the paint and eventually the paint would move on u..orange peel

make sure your adhesion promoter is for plastic and dont put wax on the paint for at least 6 months, the paint has to "breath" for a while and the wax will clog it up

Mine is still stock, and the door moldings are way more faded then the other moldings, why does it do that?!

Has nobody noticed that the door trim is RUBBER and the trim on the fenders is PLASTIC. I'm sure this has something to do with it.

Either take of the damn stuff altogether or get back to black. Hey but what ever floats your boat man.

why dont you get it professionally done.. it seems like you have spent more money doing it yourself over and over, when you could of got it done right the first time.
