Default Why do Civic hood releases break and are aftermarket ones available?

I was reading the thread about all the things that go wrong with our civics and I was annoyed to discover that there are two people, those who have broken hood releases and those who will have broken hood releases.. So now I'm wondering, why exactly do they break and are there aftermarket ones that can be used that are more durable, etc. than the OEM ones?

because were allllll using cars that are 15+ years old. its just a metal cable it gets rusted and snaps as does any cable. idk. about aftermarket but a new oem one should last you another 10ish years.

or theres the aftermarket pliers.

well considering the number of complaints about people replacing these PITA cables and then them breaking, I'd have to assume they broke in less than 10 years time.

They could have just bought a autozone cable instead of OEM.

I see a lot more 96-00 Civic broken releases because:

1. People pull on it as though it is the hinged design of the 92-95 Civic when it needs to only be pulled straight out - pulling up on it breaks it pretty easily, even new ones.

2. Crappy design

I say tie a freaking looped string on the end and be done with it.
