Why does the coolant need to be drained for Timing belt replacement ? Honda civic 97.

Didn't drain it on my 98 ex. Just a little fill up from what came out when replacing the water pump.

ha, there ya go..thats why. when you replace your timing belt it would be wise to replace the water pump at the same time.

Yes, I would highly reccomend changing water pump when doing timing belt.

you guys recommend timing belt tensioner too, What can go wrong with that on a vehicle that is already running ? Is it some bearing stuff ?
