Guys,
Pardon for my lack of expertise.

Why does the coolant need to be drained for Timing belt replacement ? Honda civic 97.

Appreciate the education.

it doesn't need to drain but when you change the timing belt you should also change the water pump, when you take out the water pump, coolant will come out from there and you will need to add more coolant to the radiator once you are done.

why dont you ask in the civic forum?? the SOHC might be a little different than our DOHC's, unless you have an engine swap

same shytttttt but u dont have to drain the coolont system but u need to bleed it afterwards incase u have air bublles that can cause your car to run hot

when you remove the water pump you have less spilled coolant to deal with, and also you would have to bleed the cooling system anyways afterwards, it would be better to start with fresh coolant after bleeding it.
