and i think bhp is at the flywheel, not sure though. whp is lower cuz of the drivetrain.

the difference is whp is the power your car gets to the wheels, and bhp is the horspower your car gets at the crank...the reason why it's different like that is because during the transfer of the power from your motor to your wheels it loses about 15% of the horsepower (rule of thumb)

i have an eg and it is the d15b8 in my cx so they are diff, the hp rating on a cx is 70 hp but i have a cdm model and have found no info on it, so i wonder sometimes if it is a) underrated or b) more hp in the cdm model? who knows but anyways theres the facts

I'm too lazy to read all the replies so if I repeat sorry. BHP (binary (sp?)horsepower) is measured at the flywheel while WHP (Wheel Horsepower) is obviously measured at the wheel. You will always find that the wheel horsepower is going to be less then binary horsepower because you lose a lot of power through the drivetrain and whatnot. Hope that helps. Peace

Horsepower figures, in general, are bullsh!t. When liars figure - figures lie, you know? Horsepower, itself, is just a mathmatical formula that is computed from TORQUE, which IS real and measurable.

I won't bore you with the math, but TORQUE and HORSEPOWER are ALWAYS the same at 5252-RPM. That should proof enough that something isn't right here.

Anyway, horsepower can be FIGURED any way you want it to be FIGURED, depending on what your agenda is...

torque is always the same at 5252? thats crazy ****! what if a car redlines at like 4500 or sumthin like a hotrod? just wonderin.

then it has more torque than it does horsepower.

my trans am is about 300 horse and 325 torque, redlines at 5 grand

yep !! also in EU instead of 5252.. we have it arund 7200 RPM that HP and TQ meets.. and we normaly do in flywheel HP ..

Yes, torque ALWAYS equals horsepower at 5252-RPM. Look at ANY dyno chart and you'll see what I mean. It's universal...

Example: I just did a search on Google for "dyno chart". This is the first one that popped-up. It's for an Atkins rotary engine; whatever the hell that is...

Please note that HP and torque are the same at 5252-RPM.

A dyno measures torque, then FIGURES horsepower from the torque READINGS. Torque is real and measurable. Horsepower is bogus because it depends on a mathmatical formula, which is computed from actual torque. That's why you end up so many different kinds of horsepower...

Now i don't wanna be a dick and correct someone, and i don't wanna be a dumb ***, BUT doesnt BHP stand for BRAKE horsepower (non Binary) and WHP for WHEEL horsepower. Because I have watched a ton of British vids and they always mention brake HP.

Anyways that is my $.02

Yeah, that always rattles 'their' cages; the ppl that believe in the Horsepower Fairy...

Now that you have that under your belt, here's a good one for you. Some guy got all upset one time and posted a dyno chart that he thought proved me wrong. In fact, the X-Y axis had been manipulated to fool unsuspecting ppl into believing some lie or another; who knows what kind of larceny they were up to? It gets back to the old "when liars figure" comment above. So, I charted it out for him. This was the result:

Now, look at it very carefully! He said the torque equaled horsepower at 6350-RPM, not 5252, so I was wrong. However, upon careful inspection, he was wrong. Follow the red lines that I drew to the sides of the chart. Horsepower and torque WERE equal at 5252-RPM, not 6350. Someone had just screwed with the numbers on the X-Y axis to make it look better.

What's the moral of the story? Horsepower FIGURES can be manipulated to say anything you want. Torque is the only reliable MEASURE of power output and torque is what you FEEL in a car, not horsepower...

bhp refers to brake horsepower. That is measured at the crank and the engine faces resistance from a brake. Something like that...it's 1am and I don't feel like typing out an explanamation...

From another website...forgot the address, but do a search on google for "what is bhp"

what is bhp?
engine produces power, measured in brake horsepower. standard measurement= 1.6 litre horse can lift 550 lb weight at the speed of one foot per second....= ihp.

why brake horsepower?
because it's the same as horsepower. word brake refers to the fact that the power is measured on a 'braked' dyno-where the dyno rollers are braked to provide rolling resistance against the engine BUT:--- power isnt the most important measure of how good an engine is...the main thing is Torque...torque describes the ability of the engine at converting air/fuel mix into motive force.
