Re: who in here engine brakes? (lazy bum shaughn)
people always ask me why i don't... everyone tells me to downshift instead because its bad on the brakes. then i tell them the price difference between brake pads and a new engine and they shut the **** up.

Easyer to replace brakes then a tranny.......I agree. Altho its fun to down shift, I don't do it all the time, but I dont take it out of gear when slowing down.

ya..thats what i thought at first...that it'd wear the tranny/clutch...but i dont think i does. my friends dad is an auto mechanic, and he's for engine braking..
if you dont know what that means..its when you're comming to a red light and you downshift from gear to gear...i.e. 5th to 4th....then 4th to 3rd and so on..i do it and it slows down well, and i barely ever ride to brakes for a smooth stop. and the rpm needle never passes 3500 rpm.
your thoughts, guys?

just brake earlier with progressive force and you won't be killing your pads as fast. I've had my stock brake pads for ..4yrs now? I'm still running them and they haven't faded much at all
I know I should get a brake check soon though ahahah :D

There's no difference between your engine going to a certain RPM from acceleration or deceleration, revs are revs. Now if you go from 5th to 2nd at 80 MPH, that's a different story. The only bad thing out of engine braking is gas mileage, really.

Doesn't the engine pull a vacuum when you engine brake? Putting a opposite load on a engine can't be good for the rings or the engine/drivetrain in general. Then again I usually am wrong

actually yes it is easier on a car to engine brake then to use your brakes.
lets say you are going down a mountian pass, now if you use your brakes the entire time they will over heat, and then do one of the folowing, if not both....they will either crack, or sieze up.
OR you can use your engine to brake and this way it will slow you down and you can use your brakes lightly to slow you down.

I just double-clutch down through the gears, sounds nice and doesn't do a single bit of damage to the engine, transmission, or brakes. Its always worked for me.

Re: who in here engine brakes? (SM Polishing)
i do both...neva only brake, but neva only engine brake...aparently too much engine braking is bad for the internals and just braking will 'soften up' brake pads and wear rotors faster...

honda syncros are SHITTY
im not gonna give them any more reason to go out, i only downshift when im slowing down and need to go again, or about to pass someone.
engine braking dosent do anything to the engine but it is hard on a transmission.

Re: who in here engine brakes? (cxSOHChatch)
i only downshift depending on the weather,...if its nasty outside then yes i do downshift,..i use every precaution to make sure i dont skid into a car or a curb,...but i never only downshift without tapping on the brakes,..and i never let the RPMS go over 3500 when downshifting,..usually if the roads are dry then i use the brakes,...even when i use my brakes,..i never have them constantly held down,..i usually keep on tapping,..i dont know if this is helping prolong the life of my pads or not but this is what i have always done

Re: who in here engine brakes? (one-syk)
i use the brakes to stop/slow down
only time i ever keep it in gear slowing down is if im already going at a slow pace and i'm not on the gas, and i know that i'm about to get on the gas again cuz the light just changed etc.
brake pads are cheaper than tranny/clutch. and they're way easier to change

Re: who in here engine brakes? (Pengo)
the only time i wont use the brakes to slow down is when im in a traffic jam, then sometimes its easier to just play w/ the clutch, but if i see a light turn red, i always put my car in neutral and use my brakes. it seems like common sense, your brakes are not getting tired from liiiigghhht stops, they get tired from really using them which creates alot of heat. if you needed to slow down from 80 mph to 30 to take a slow offramp, thats when your really wearing your brakes and i guarantee you wouldnt "engine brake" in that situation. anytime you can use downshifting to effectively slow down, youve done more damge to your transmission than your brakes, brakes are wear items, trannys are expensive.

i always engine brake...i barely ever use my brakes. i can be goin like 60 and downshift from 5th all the way into 1st without braking and then come to a stop unless im on a downhill...holleration y0! downshift...break yoru motors...its the new style!
