Here's my situtation...
I have a b16a (99-00 SI) transmission. Whenever my car is on, a whirring noise is coming from the transmission. When I apply the cluth it stops. Then once I put it on first gear and give it some gas, it gets louder like a bunch of screws are rumbling inside the tranny.. It happens on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. I've changed the transmission oil with some Syncromesh, but it's still there.

it sounds like your throw-out bearing may be fubard. whirring noise when under a load or driving is normally the input shaft bearing. but just idling I would almost bet you anything its the throwout!

I'll check that when I take my tranny off.. thanks.. Anyhow, do you know how much it'd be to replace it?

when the car idles hear noise? (tranny) and then when u hit clutch the noise stops ? tranny is screwed for sure..had that on my hb.... sold it before it just went out..

Are you shitting me??? My cx is doing that now. It's like a light whirring at idle and I step down and it shuts off

throwout bearing is going bad and needs replacement. That requires pulling your tranny off, it's a good opportunity to replace your clutch/flywheel and be sure sure to replace the other bearings because it's a bitch to get off. It'll be worth your time.

You all should tend to that soon, it will only get worse the more you drive it.

it could either be your throwout bearing or ur input shaft bearing

its your input shaft bearing, cause i just changed my clutch and flywheel and was told its that bearing. I have the same problem, and you tranny is not going out ive been riding like that for over 30k miles and still like new.

you guys think that this problem would be covered by warranty?

i bought a used black EM1 from the stealership, and it has a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty.. i am having this same problem.. hopefully its covered by the warranty. i sure hope so!!! hopefully a free tranny rebuild

yea its gunna be your throw out bearing and input shaft you might need a new tranny if you fell like it cuz that happen to me on my tranny.

Mine does the same thing, but only when the car is warming up. Seems like a Honda thing, dont worry about it.

Think about it, if the noise only shows up when the clutch is pressed, there is pressure on the throwout bearing - which would make that noise then, and only then.
If the noise is when the cluth is NOT pressed then its the input shaft bearing.

Remove the tranny, separate the housings, replace the bearins on the input shaft.
Bauley has written a how-to, I suggest you look for it (served me very well when I replaced my ISB, over the winter)

I understand that, but mine just sounds like the motor is louder and when you press in the clutch it get quiter. Car shifts like brand new no questions asked.

It's input shaft bearing. Probably the first one but I would check out the back one while you at it too. I've seen cars run with all the ***** in the bearing crushed, with like 1/4" of shaft play, and you couldn't even tell unless you listen to it.

if it was throw out bearing the noise would appear when you press the clutch in.

Probably the input shaft bearing like said above. I had that whirring noise too. Check the mainshaft bearing as well if you take apart the tranny. I replaced both and the noise went away.

Well I guess in my case its not the whirring noise. If you press the clutch in all the way the rmps goes down. Kind of sounds like the there is a load being lifted off the engine when you press in the clutch, and the tranny stops spinning.

From what you are saying I would be sure that it is your input shaft bearing or honda calls it the mainshaft bearing that sits in the clutch housing. I have replaced this bearing on 2 D series transmissions and the problem was solved. bauleycivic have a very good write up but it is on the d series. In his write up someone else has one on the b series. It is really easy to do. Once you have the tranny out it will only take about 30 min to crack the tranny and replace the isb. Believe me the first time I was unsure of being capable of doing this job but if you are mechanically inclined i believe that anyone can do it if they really want to. The main reason why i did it in the first place is the cheapest estimate just to replace that one bearing with the tranny already out was $500.

Hell its not even a noise at all. Just when you disengage the clutch the idle goes down and the tranny isnt spinning anymore so the sound of the tranny spinning goes away.
